Reading the thread about daft things wardens have said, I noticed that all the incidents were on UK sites, which got me wondering ...

Has anyone had similar things happen on Continental sites?

The only places we had problems with this "it's the rules" business, was on sites either in Holland or run by Dutch people elsewhere!

Everywhere else, there was always a friendly and charming welcome - apart from one site near Cordoba, where the girl managed to book me in without so much as a word or once looking at me - though she still kept up a conversation with her mates in the back room

As the other half is Dutch , I can,t comment. Once you have known them for 20 years they do lighten up a bit .

Våmhus, in Sweden (Dalarna), at a caravan site on the banks of Lake Orsa, a smaller lake off Lake Siljan, a beautiflu location as you can imagine. In reception the woman who checked us in grunted a couple of times and had a face like a split welly throughout. Checking out in the morning a couple more grunts (one in reponse to a cheery good morning) and another dose of the split welly treatment. The odd thing here is that we'd phoned the site and had a really nice conversation with a very cheerful sounding person about availability. Other than Ms. Misery-guts the main down-side here was the showers. The temperature was entirely dependant on which and how many sink taps were running and toilet cisterns filling.
But what a location.

We don't seem to come across this attitude in Europe - the only place we can think of off-hand is La Manga in Spain where we were thinking of spending a few days - but after 2 minutes in reception we decided to just stay 1 night!!

Oh and Monte Gordo Municipal site in Portugal where "pitch police" come around every day to see what you've got and what you've paid for!!! ( eg windbreaks, tents etc!) :Eeek:
You also need a swipe card (even for dogs!) to get in and out of the site and God forbid you should try to get through without swiping!!!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Other than that the attitude is generally very amiable and friendly and helpful!
We've camped in France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Norway and Portugal.

At the moment we're on a Spanish site which is very quiet - there are two of us camped together and other than our official pitches we've got 1 for car parking and 2 for washing lines - sometimes we use another 2 as sun terraces!! No-one bats an eyelid!!!:thumb::thumb:

Actually - reading these has reminded me of the misery checking us in on the Via Aurelia (Camping Roma) site.
I was ready to give him a few home truths when we checked out, but he'd been replaced by a most charming young woman who apologised for her city because we'd been robbed twice

And then there was the site on Lake Garda with the swipe cards - it looked like a prison camp

When arriving on any site in Hungary you are given a number of forms which must be completed. One of the questions asked is "on which date did you cross the border and at what time?"

I asked the warden about this and she said "oh its for the authorities". I thought to myself, blimey.....i've been in many ex-eastern bloc countries and never encountered this before plus Hungary was one of the first to open its borders to east Germans.

Eventually I just wrote something daft like 1403hrs 23 seconds!

Our first ever visit to France had been to the Loire Valley and a wonderful site called Camping Chantepie Link Removed and no signs of those 'nasty' French we had read about.

However that changed as the next year we decided to venture further south to the Dordogne area and a camp site called Moulin Du Perie. owned by a Henri & Anne-Marie Baudot

We had several 'run ins' with the owners of this site, in particular one day when as i was about to empty our 38ltr Waste master of grey waste into a drain under a tap the owner Henri shouted for me to stop then escorted me to the sites chemical waste hopper. :Eeek:

Now the lip of this hopper must have been 3ft high and not an easy task to lift 38ltrs that height to empty.

We also had English friends who live in Spain visit and stay with us and they to incurred the wrath of the Baudots.

On our return home and at the Calais ferry terminal we got chatting to another caravanning group who had also had a bad experience at this site.

I fell foul of a French law last year..
red hot day.. in the pool...
Been in for about 10 minutes when A person ( possibly male possibly female ) shouted at the top of its voice that I must get out immediately

I had NO idea swimming shorts are illegal in French swimming pools !
That put the kybosh on all further swimming as a big fat old geezer in speedo's is a scary site I did not wish to impose on anyone ::bigsmile:

Mind you, might just have to get me some as we are travelling back down thru France to get to Spain this year ......

Actually Jim I think thats quite right. Look at the chaotic and noisy sites 'brits' frequent here and meekly accept as 'normal'.

Swiss also have this 'germanic' characteristic about them with what some may see as a bit extreme, but basically it's just strong self discipline. It probably explains why everything in their country runs so efficiently without the pottiness of a 'nanny state'.

We are quite a sloppy lot really.

I am much cheered by visions of Jaws in Speedo's, thank you for that picture, John!!!

Pete's OK as he hasn't purchased any swimming things since the Speedos - being as we simply don't have any kind of dress-code trouble on sites we like to go to!!!!
