Hi there,

We're coming to a junction point in our eurotour soon. We'll be in Slovenia for the next few days, until about the 16th August. We want to see both Croatia and Italy but we're undecided on which would be best to visit first. We are aware that late August is the most crowded time all around this region (Italy and Croatia), but that is just how our trip has gone. So, can we have suggestions if it would be better to turn down the Dalmation coast first and tour Croatia and Montenegro first for a few weeks till end of August, then ferry across to Italy and make our way up through September. Or would it be better to travel down through Italy first for a few weeks, ferry across to Montenegro and make our way up through Croatia during September. A few extra miles doesn't bother us that much, it's just a question of where "might" be least crowded or better in other ways.

Intermittent internet, so hope for some replies and suggestions when we check here next in a few days.

Thanks

We would do Croatia first because in July/August our Italian friends migrate en masse to Croatia, in theory leaving space for you to enjoy Italy at your leisure.....

This is in fact what we did. Italy until end August, then ferry across to Croatia for September.

We're planning to visit Croatia in early September - what was it like?

Fantastic. We would have loved to spend a lot more time there. If you get tired of the sea, drive inland to Plitvice national park.
That's on our plan already - to visit the lakes
We've only got 3 weeks, so won't be going too far South

We went in September last year for 3 weeks, weather was great. We went as far as Dubrovnik, which was fantastic, returning via Plitvica Lakes. Visited Lubijana as well on our journey back.
Croatia is beautiful, Ston is worth a visit, lots of Vineyards and seafood. We also enjoyed Slovinia especially Lake Bled and as we travelled south we took a day trip into Venice, via train. If we hadn't booked to go to the Octoberfest in Munich we would have stayed longer in Croatia. We will definately return and spend more time in the northern parts
Enjoy your trip
Chris

Chris, sounds like you had a very similar schedule to us. We spent a few weeks in Croatia from start of September but had to make it up to Munich for the Oktoberfest, or we would have stayed longer. On the way up to Munich we took in Slovenia (rainy!), specifically Bled and Soca valley/mountains/reserve.

Our trip in Croatia wasn't as explorative as we would have liked due to time. We landed by Ferry in Dubrovnik (from Bari), stayed at a friendly camp site south of the city for five days, taking the bus in to Dubrovnik most days to meet friends but also exploring the beaches near our camp site. Then took a few days to drive south to explore some of Montenegro. After that we drove up to Camping Nevio further north, fantastic camp site. Spent a few relaxing days there and Korcula, then onward to Plitvice. After that back to the beaches to a camp site near Rovinj for a few more relaxing beach days. And after that, the end of Croatia for us till next time.

Btw, sounds like you also stayed in Treviso, and took the cheap train in the Venice for the day?
