Is it possible to get to Pompeii, toll free/cheap (1 Viewer)

I would like to go to Pompeii with the wife but the thought of the tolls in France and Italy along with the tunnel tolls makes it look rather unlikely I could probably avoid most of the French ones using the scenic routes but it very expensive to go through the tunnels and to go along the Ventamille coast road is mostly toll roads. As far as I can see it is virtually impossible to go down Italy on old roads.
Has anybody done this and what did it cost.

You would not want to drive down old Italian roads, not been maintained since Mussolini left.

Herculaneum is better than Pompeii in my opinion, but do both.

Via Michelin will offer you a toll free from Ventimillia to Pompeii.

Have to agree Herculaneum is more compact than Pompeii and quieter.
