Do you have latest software and tried a reboot.. ?

Otherwise possible faulty screen.. My wifes ipad2 had something similar, just used to go off on one, zooming in and out and changing all on it's own..
Luckily Son works at a phone / tablet repair centre.. :)

Do a reset on it, hold down the off button and the home button together until the apple logo comes on the screen, the ipad will then restart, you won't loose anything. Hope it works for you.

My iPad is fine and I'm on the old settings, heard too many horror stories about the latest update, hope you sort your problems out. (y)

From Apple communities site

As for the source of the error... could be nothing more than a very dirty screen reading sporadic touches where none exist. If cleaning it doesn't help, try resetting the iPad. Press and hold both the home button and the sleep/wake button for about 10 seconds, until the screen turns off. Ignore the slider that will appear. Release the buttons, then press and hold the sleep/wake button until the Apple logo appears. This is the equivalent of a reboot, and should not affect your data or apps.

If that doesn't work, restore it using iTunes. If even that doesn't work, reset it to factory defaults, without restoring anything from backups. If it's still acting up at that point, it's a hardware problem, and you'll need to contact Apple for service.

All works well on mine, and that's after updating to latest OS three days ago. Have noticed no adverse effects from update.

Just spent 2 days sorting my iPad out. Decided to upgrade to iOS 8 etc and iPad totally locked up !
Looked on forums and spent hours messing with laptop and iTunes etc, ended up having todo a full restore option, luckily I had backed up to iCloud so got everything back except music and photos, which luckily are elsewhere. Nightmare.
