Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
Some will say different, but DO NOT connect to starter battery ONLY "Hab" batteries.

Simply as a common sense measure, to the Leisure battery,,
It can and will work from cab/starter battery BUT if you over use the inverter and flatten the battery you face the issue of not starting your van... SIMPLES :)

Use leisure battery

cable size depends on length of cable run.. so keep it as short as possible..

a 1500w inverter takes 125A on full load ,(watts/voltage )

calculate cable size here .. http://www.solar-wind.co.uk/cable-sizing-DC-cables.html

example.. a 1mt run would need 16 sq.mm cable

250amp fuse, wire will depend on length. 16/25mm if not sure best to get someone to do it for you. You may be pulling 150amps. wires get hot very quick if not correct.

And don't forget the RCD on the 22o VAC output.

1500 is more than enough to kill you

either way.. but pos to one battery and neg to the other is preferable

While your at it, Using a minimum of 25mm2 Cable connect the positive of the engine battery to terminal number 30 on a 300 amp relay (fused both ends) and connect terminal number 87 to the positive of your leisure batteries (again fused both ends). Connect terminal number 86 to your flag terminal on your alternator. Connect terminal number 85 to the negative pole of a battery or the chassis

Using the same gauge cable uprate the Negative battery lead on the leisure batteries to the vehicle chassis and as Techno said, connect Pos-Pos and Neg to Neg using the same size cable on your two leisure batteries (to equalise the load)

If you do that, you will be able to use your inverter whilst on the move, and tickover should your leisure batteries be a little flat!

Just though you may as well whilst sourcing bits and making up batteries leads etc.

what size fuse should i use each end also my two batteries are connected together with quite small gauge wire with inline fuses do i leave these in and just connect them pos to pos and neg to neg with the 25mm cable?

Connect up with 25mm2 cable and remove the boot laces.

25mm2 cable is rated nominally at 170 amps so you wouldn't want the cable giving way before the fuse so 150 amp Mega fuse would be fine

In reality it doesn't need to be so big Some thing like this would do it Broken Link Removed

That unit means that you don't have to wire to the alternator as it senses the engine is running via the rise in voltage. You can also wire that unit to give you emergency start should the engine battery be flat

Yes that would be fine to leave as your not adding anything additional to that circuit.

If the basic inverter is 1500 watts it probably has the capacity to cope with a higher wattage at start up. My 1500 watt can take up to 3000 watts which of course raises the requirements. I have a 250 amp meg fuse and 70mm2 cabling joining the batteries together and feeding the inverter. I have just spent a happy couple of hours wiring up 2 inline RCD units as off the shelf plug in ones would not fit the design of the inverter.

Thanks for that, the rcd looks ideal.
