Bought one or two cheap ones, never had any luck.

    Use, laptops and hair straightners,

Unless you a willing to splash out for a good one there is no point, cheap ones are what they are.
I have a pure shine inverter 3000 watt which will give me 2000 concistant watts battery's permitting of course, we use microwave, toaster, hair dryer for the wife washing machine, TV, laptops, charging and I run the fridge during the day time as long as the sun is shining.
To support this I have three leisure battery's and two one hundred watt solar panels.
Don't be fooled by cheap imertations or modified version as you have already found they are just not up to the job.

Jim, as I only have a 800watts inverter ( that's all I need ) I cannot recommended what you do or do not run on an inverter. A 2000 watts version is more than enough for 90% of the things you might want to run in a MH.
As @Hydrocell states "cheap ones are what they are" but none the less they work. If your going to use an inverter every day for 7/10 hours then of course buy the "top of the range", but if your only going to use a hairdryer for 15 minutes cheap is good enough.

thats all i want it for -a SWMBO hairdryer -not mine for a few mins plus possibly a microwave with a mechanical clock for a few mins-just curious what you used the one you noted for-wasn't asking for recommendations-just looking for a reasonably cheap one that will work with hairdryer (500w) and microwave (700w)

Jim, the one I have shown link to will do the job just fine. Microwaves are funny beasts as it might say 700watts, but on start up could be as high as 2000 watts, so be careful. Also be aware using a microwave for long periods will KILL your batteries.

Dunno if gas hair straighteners exit, gas curling tongues certainly do.
    Same thing?
Not an issue for me, my hair's thinning.
    WTF, who wants fat hair?

My hair is " thinning" too John.

In my case that sounds much better than " I am almost bald":D
