Moved from caravan in 2017
Hi one and all,
I'm Alistair (writing as Seakerr) and my other half is Sheila. We've been caravanning for many years but as these years pass I'm not so keen on hooking up, unloading water and waste containers etc and so we're looking around for a motorhome. My licence will only allow me to drive something under three and a half tons and so we're looking for something without a fixed bed. I'm writing this on the ferry from Spain. So the search is about to start!

Welcome Alistair, don't forget there is a classified section on Motorhome Fun, and some of the best private purchases are made on here.

:welco: I may be prejudiced but the Hymer 544 and 584 fits the discriptions, under 3.5 tons, just under 6 meters, drop down bed, lots of storage. I would say half of the members on here have had a caravan at some point of their life, but as circumstances change motorhomes seem to be much more fun.
To get the best out of the forum and be able to post as many questions as you want I would become a full member £15 a year , otherwise you will only have 5 free posts, full membership is usually having a answer to your questions very quickly.

Welcome to Fun :welcomesign:autotradermotorhomes on the net have literally thousands of vans to view and as you have been a tugger for awhile you should be able to narrow your choice through your previous experience.
I personally prefer "A" class vans which have a bed that extends down from above the cab at night. Coachbuilt vans also have a bed above the cab but it is a permanent feature and can result in a bulbous front end appearance. I have a Hymer B584 "A" class myself, second one, and really can't fault it, under 6 metres which makes it cheaper on ferries and toll roads, max weight 3.5 tons.
Have fun searching, a great experience. Wet here also but nothing to do with being on a ferry.
Norman.

Welcome, we'll be on the Pont Aven next month, leaving from Plymouth - hopefully. It broke down this time last year. :)
You can get vehicles under 3.5t with fixed beds, the Globecar ones seem very popular. They aren't for us as the living quarters are too compact but there are other options. Probably a bit far north from you but East Neuk make one with two long seats which convert in a flash to two singles. And then of course there are the drop down beds as already mentioned.
We have a Murvi, made a little outside Plymouth so not a million miles away from you in Hampshire.
The range is enormous but beware some vehicles claiming to be 3.5t have a payload little more than a toothbrush with holes drilled in the handle to lighten it. :)

Welcome to the forum! Hampshire, eh? There are a few Motorhome dealers in Hampshire, where you can wander round at leisure. From memory, at Viscount, it was a case of being escorted round, but as total beginners, we found that quite useful.
Ultimately, we bought a Hymer B544 through Bundesvan. No regrets, so far. We're currently itching to get out and about again in the Moho. I'm currently awaiting the Boss's decision on my 3 weeks leave request for June. He retires today- hopefully, he'll sign it off before he goes.(y)

You'll find a wealth of knowledge, and wit, on this forum.
