Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of questions on here about SIM cards while travelling abroad.

I have been looking at these for use in my "dongle". I tried a "3" ( I think 2gb) while away for over two months, only to find that they can only be used up to two months, even if you have not used all your data. When you get back to the UK you can use any unused data.

I have just come across another "3" with
24gb that lasts for up to 24 months with no time limit while abroad. It can be used in the following countries:- UK/USA/EUROPE/ASIA.

PRICED AT £79.99 via E-bay

Any thoughts?

I think you'll find that there is a "fair usage" limit using the data when out of the UK. The trick is to have several cards and swap over while away. I thought the 24month cards were much cheaper than £80 though.

I thought data roaming charges were ending this year anyway
I believe Vodafone already announced this? With others to follow suit

I think it's 15th of June onwards that it becomes illegal to charge for roaming data in EU

Even if it does come in you will still have to have a contract with loads of data on a phone , and that still won't work on a tablet, unless they let you tether.

We have been using a 24gb three sim (I think it was £27.99 on Amazon). In theory it lasts 2 years but for a max of 2 months abroad. We have been using ours for over 2 months, so it seems a bit hit and miss.

You maybe have , as I have with o2 , but that doesn't meen others have.
I'm not arguing I'm just saying as some may not be aware. No need to buy 2yrs sims if the changes go ahead and you have a contract.

The problem is that most mobile operators won't let you tether when abroad. I doubt that it will change after June.
It's not a problem if you want to use just a phone but if you want to use a tablet or laptop you still need another sim in a Mi-Fi or similar.

I do too and if I can't get wifi I plug a dongle into the Alfa with a Three data sim in it. Best of both worlds.

Edit:
Rreread your post, it's an Alfa router I use with an external aerial I pop on the roof, can get a signal up to a couple of km away if clear line of site.

We are in France at the moment and I can recommend the SIM card that chaser has put a link to.

It's in our tablet and has been working perfectly well over here for about three weeks.

We use it for emails, Google maps, Facebook (I know, I know!) and going on different forums on a regular basis.

The card has had a heck of a lot of use and, so far, has used about 4.5 Gb of the 12 Gb that was originally on the card.

We have been on many different French providers and it's worked on them all.

Hope this helps.

At the moment o2 charge £1.99 a day anywhere in Europe, and for this you get unlimited? Data, all calls and messages for the day , midnight to midnight, this is nothing to do with your contract mins, and you can also tether with it, I know this is not cheap but for say a week at £14.00 all data and calls isn't the end of the world , and if as has been mentioned it is going to get cheaper, can't be bad, no faffing about with other sims or anything just seamless connection. Saying this we do use 3 in a mifi for longer periods.

I have the EE dongle and I have signed up for two years, I however forgot all about roaming charges as it has a load that are usable over the sea. BUT in order to check what happens I rang them and they could not tell me, I wanted to know if I would be held to the partial amount of units or would I get all available Mbs anywhere, there or here, as against the smaller number there. No answer We have to wait to find out the new rules it seems.
