    Hi Everyone,
I am trying to obtain insurance cover for my son either to be included as a named driver on my insurance policy for a VW T4 camper or have his own policy but I am finding it very difficult to do so. Although he is 24-years of age he only passed his driving test 6-months ago and most insurers stipulate a minimum driving experience of 2-years. Does anyone know of an insurer who considers inexperienced camper van drivers? Another problem I'm having with motorcaravan insurers is that they don't seem to distinguish between camper vans and motorhomes - the usage of which can be very different.

Have a try with direct line, they give NCB to named drivers - though they are only recognised by Direct line. Failing that, try some specialists such as adrian flux - even co-op do yound drivers.

Can't see why they won't insure him - I guess they think camper is going to be 3.5t which is his legal licence limit - but it is only 2.5, so you have a ton to play with for luggage and passengers, so cannot see a problem!

You see plenty of youngsters down cornwall in vw's with little experience - have you thought about asking on a T4 forum?? They might have special deals with insurers etc?

Co-op covered my nephew for the van when he was 24. Although it was still expensive it was the cheapest around. Premium went down a fair amount when he hit 25.

Thank you for the comments. Having contacted various specialist motorcaravan insurers the problem is sometimes my son being under 25-years of age but in all instances it's the lack of driving experience (less than 2 or 3 years) that is the main reason for cover being declined. The lack of driving experience is not a problem for obtaing car insurance, although the premium is of course much greater, but when it comes to camper vans I've been unable to find ANY insurer who will offer cover unless the driver has a minimum of 2-years driving experience. The comment made about the surfing community is relevant but even they have difficulty obtaining vehicle insurance cover and many choose to drive 'surf vans' to overcome the problem as these are registered as commercial vans not motorcaravans.
