A friend of mine has had his house broken in to. He has a nearly new BMW parked on the drive. They broke in to his house setting his alarm off in the process, they still searched his kitchen drawers and 2 bedroom drawers for keys. The didn't steal anything so were only there to find keys.

I never leave any spare keys in drawers or cupboards in the house and dont leave keys downstairs at night. I thought I would just remind you all to keep keys safe and not where a thief may expect to find them.

Was your friend away at the time and would that have been obvious to the burglars.
It takes some bottle for them to search the upstairs with the alarm going, not knowing if they are going to be confronted by the owner.

That is a thought provoking , but that's why we went to vanbitz and installed the Growler and the remote immobiliser. Just have to write a memo to myself to change , where I hide the keys. :(

Good thread Jez, our keys (car, house, garage etc) are never left in the kitchen, or any easily accessible room when we're at home, and when we're away we have hiding places for them where no-one will find them we also hide any credit/debit cards, cash etc too (we've forgotten where they were before now! :D2). We've done it for donkey's years - we've been burgled (albeit a long time ago) but it does make you think about how easy it would be for a set of keys to be pinched which may not be noticed at the time and then allow the culprits to come back later for easy access.

We have an alarm and also 3 dogs so most of the time we don't have to be overly concerned as they are usually in when we're not, but when we are away overnight or going on holiday the more 'rigid' security mode of 'HECK' comes into play ... Hide Everything, Cards and Keys.:)

Someone we know had their T6 VW nicked last week after breaking into the house for the keys.
The police told them not to hide keys as they will do more damage looking for the keys???
You can't win either way.

A bobby I know was telling me a cunning wheeze they play when they get into the house........First job, put a pan of water on the cooker. Then, if anyone descends from upstairs (usually dressed only in night attire) whilst they are searching, they sling the pan of now boiling water over you...........:Eeek:

So I've got to hide the keys and go outside and switch the gas off :(.
Years ago someone I knew had their car pinched from their drive, it reappeared the next day, no damage, with a note inside it saying how sorry they were they had to steal their car but it was an emergency, as way of saying sorry they had booked a table at a restaurant for them with a tab paid for them to use, whilst they were out at the restaurant the house got done over as well, a cunning plan!

I must remember that the second my alarm goes off, to give them plenty of time to find my pan cupboard, fill a suitable pan with water and give them plenty of time to bring it to the boil, before I rush in to spoil their night.... not forgetting to allow for the fact that they may be watching the pan, because if the same principle applies as to watched kettles, it will never boil :rofl:

How do you know though??
It's plausible, plenty of gullible people give their bank details over the phone to spammers, I'm more than sure someone would jump at a free meal or ticket, particularly if they were freeloading motorhomers :)

I am so paranoid now when away in my mh I allow my neighbour's burley footballer sons to use my home. No saving on gas or electric therefore, but feel safe.

Why would you want to put yourself in a position where you and the family are upstairs alsleep and some idiot wants your vehicles he's prepared to torture you to get them
That's why I have insurance and let the old bill sort out the rest at the end of the day it's a car and M/H
There's some desperate people out there who would think nothing of weighing you in

I learnt my key security back in the '80s from the lyrics of the Final Cut by Pink Floyd and they've served me well ever since.... ;)

"If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
and if you make it past the shotgun in the hall,
dial the combination, open the priest hole
and if I'm in I'll tell you
(where my keys are)"

Each to their own, but on principle I could not willingly hand my keys over and would defend my own property.
My van has been a long 6 months in coming and I'll be damned if I let someone walk away with it, while I have a year out, waiting to settle insurance and re-ordering.

You could always spend 6 months in hospital is the way I look at it, if I was on my own then different, but with family involved rather let them take it
Are you not ex old bill, if so am sure your aware of the scroats out there who have nothing to lose and do far more for less than £100k

Must agree ... they can take what they want and I'll pretend to be asleep ... I can live without car or mh .. but not with some physical damage they could do to me or family .. There are some nasty pieces of work out there .. I would prefer to live another day.

You are right, they are out there and living by myself, I don't have to consider the safety of my family, thus my 'each to their own' comment.

You think you might let them have your car, or motorhome, but they might not give you the choice, they may not even be after your vehicles. I've met many mild mannered gentlemen in the past, who surprised themselves when actually confronted by burglars in their own homes and adrenalin took over. I'm thinking of one such person who came home on Xmas eve and found the kiddie's presents ripped open, with burglar still in the house. When me and my mate arrived, our first call was for an ambulance and it wasn't for the house owner who had defended himself and family by disabling the threat. This little fella was so pumped up, he was still wanting to have a go at the burglar as we were removing him from the house.
I agree, we could have just as easily found the house owner injured, but until it happens, you just don't know how you will react on the spur of the moment, which explains seeing 'gym monsters' totally embarrassed by the fact that they froze in similar situations, so I don't cast judgement.

Lets hope none of us find out !

that is so funny....reminds me of an incident where a friend a few doors down called for help as he had trapped a burglar in an upstairs room. myself, 6ft4 and 18 stone, and my father 6ft and an 18 stone builder. opened the door and confronted the burglar. he near enough shit himself on the spot. meanwhile the householder called up the police.
A while later a police car pulls up and the only officer available, a 5ft 9 stone woman, comes upstairs to arrest the thief. I offered to escort the thief down the stairs for safety, but the police officer declined saying "i've got this". she handcuffed the thief and walked him to the top of the stairs and leant him forwards down the steep stairs and said "you ARE going to behave, aren't you?

Not certain if the thief was terrified of us or the little female police officer, but he was quiet as a lamb and walked obediently down the stairs and got in the police car on request. sneaky little bastard pled guilty to that burglary and numerous others knowing the courts would be lenient. he got 6 months

Most burglaries occur when people are out
Most burglars are not interested in confrontation.. there is always an easier target.
Aggravated burglary ... (where there's some sort of violence or restraint) is not very common.
If people take reasonable precautions re security and keep themselves alert then the chances of being a victim diminish. If people use some sort of physical security (Gates or posts) and conceal their keys then they probably won't lose their vehicle off their drive.
We could all though just allow anyone to take anything they fancy.
Of course family come first but at some point one has to make a stand or the bad people will always win. Most scrotes are cowards and will not risk getting caught.

Probably right and if I lived on my own I would gas him tie him up and off up onto the moors in my boot, however if your talking about an average scrote he's looking for a quick buck, but someone looking to take a new motor & Motorhome is a different kettle of fish he's coming mob handed ready to do business your average knobhead is not capable of getting rid of a van and car worth £80k plus
But if your ready for a tear up then crack on (y)
