Since 2008 after caravanning for 20 years
Was there a couple of years ago, early in the season as it gets very crowded July//August making the roads nose to tail. Nice for cycling as there are loads of paths. Did find it tight for the van off the main roads in some villages though and we are only 7.00 m long. Nice island though, used to go there with the kids years ago. Sites at the beach are more crowded than the others. Can't remember what the toll on the bridge is but I seem to recall they were nearly finished paying for the bridge.

One of the few places we keep going back to, if you are going out of season I would get camping cheque there is a good camping site that does camping cheques called La Ocean at Couarde, if you have bikes definitely take them because it there is probably more flat cycle ways than roads, well worth a visit.

Camping Caravaning now 5'ering 49 years
When we went there our memories were - very expensive, very busy, very pretty, very commercialised and there are more interesting places in some of the mainland villages not too far away far cheaper and with less hassle. Having said that I am glad we went otherwise it would still be on our list of to do's

Hi Kickstart
We visited there September last year, when you get over the bridge (toll about 20 euros ish) our sat nav tried to take us off left at the roundabout ignore that and keep to the right, we stopped first camp on the right pitch right on the beach front, good camp we used acsi, good cycle track right along the beach front. peter :thumb::thumb:

If you don't want to use campsites there are at least 3 aires, info can be obtained at the tourist office. Poured with rain when we visited so didn't explore as much as we might have, but found the toll expensive.

We were there last June and loved it. Not too busy then. Everything that has been said in the previous posts is spot on.

Great place to visit stayed there in June/early July 2009 in St Martin de Re at the municipal campsite within the town ramparts. Found some of the private sites quite expensive. The Bridge was 16€, we toured round most of the island before picking a camp. At St Martin the pitch sizes were good. at each end of the site there were also motorhome aires one of which was new and nearly ready for opening. Loved the town and site good for access to the harbour etc. check out Ile de Re tourist website.
In 2010 we went to Ile D'Oleron that was very similar island (no payment required for entry) and again stayed on a municipal site adjacent to a small town/village that had a fabulous daily market all food, fish, bread, cakes and general goods. I would think both islands will be very busy in the French general holidays July/August however we had no problems outside that period and never pre-book camps.

Go and have a fabulous holiday :thumb:
