I hope it was a strawberry tart - Although re-reading your post I'm not sure he deserves it!

Safe trip to Calais and hoping for a smooth wine transaction at Carrefour!

Thanks Ger, it was a pear and almond. Didn't he take the lock but forget the keys last week? I'll have to get him a "adventure before dementia" sticker..

We've enjoyed a lovely bike ride around St valery, now it's time to head to cite Europe and the wine cave in Calais to pick up the second lot of wedding wine for our daughters do in April. Judging by the quantities I'm guessing these Royal Navy lot enjoy a tipple or two!

Thanks for the very informative thread. Off to IDR on the 8th so have made some notes based on your experiences. Now to convince an 8yr old that oysters are nice to eat:whistle:

This was our trip last September with the @Mousy s. We returned last month, and it's still lovely and seemed a little quieter in May.

Have a lovely time. Not sure you could ever convince an 8 year old that huitres are just like chicken nuggets though @Coastal Cruiser. ;)

Thanks Cliff/Ger, will report back. Getting the bikes ready this weekend and have had the children in training, got them up to 20km rides so hopefully they'll manage the tours around Îl de Ré, only last decision, dog or no dog.....

Might be a good idea to research the rules about dogs on beaches - there were dogs on the beaches when we were there but things might change in the 'high' season.

The cycling on the island is very easy, so children that can manage 20km here will find it a breeze!

You've probably got them, but panniers are a must for shopping on the bikes.

We described eating Oysters as 'eating the sea' doesn't work on my parents but we like them. Driving to il de re tomorrow morning , leaving Oleron and picking up the adult kids at the airport on route, bloody lovely.
