The van is packed and we are off tomorrow, heading south to Portugal and Spain.
Although we have flown to both countries over the years we have never been there with the MoHo so we are complete virgins.
Been avidly following the threads from @Robert Clark, @ianthebuilder, and others to get ideas for aires and sites and just hope we find some room when we get there.
We've got six weeks but that is flexible, so will trundle down through France and take our time.
Hope to meet up with a few Funsters so If you see a Carthago Chic with a Fun sticker in the side window please come and say hello.

Richard.

We might see you but afraid it will be going the other way, we are about to start a slow return journey via Benidorm. We came straight down to Andalusia via Salamance and loads to see and do here, we are certainly leaving a lot for next year.

Enjoy.

Thanks Martin.
I meant to say that we have been following your travels as well.
Particularly your route to avoid the tolls. (y):)

Seeing the title, I thought this thread was about a Greek Odyssey!

Sites start to empty from now on but Spanish sites will be busy and expensive the week before Easter, Semana Santa.

As quoted above, Semana Santa, is an experience in itself, however expect crowded sites charging High Season rates, this is mainly a coastal problem, however some inland sites fill if the weather is good.

The local police at Torre del Mar cleared the MHs from the large beach front carpark just to the west of the town yesterday afternoon, no more overnight parking ....maybe decided that as it was 1st March winter rules no longer apply...

We had a great time doing a month in Spain & Portugal last year. Enjoy. We especially liked Segovia and Salamanca, and if we hadn't run into a huge religious rally in Avila we would have liked to stop there and admire the walls!
A couple of good places to stop: an informal aire at Monsaraz which is very picturesque and old on top of a hill with great views by the Alqueva reservoir near Spanish border (pic looking towards the Spanish border attached), and nearby Reguengos de Monsaraz, to have fabulous Michelin star quality lunch and wine tasting at the Esporao vineyard.

Have a lovely time!

Was the restaurant within walking distance of the Aire you mention?

No Robert - they are a few miles apart. The restaurant is 4.5 miles outside Reguengos de Monsaraz, which is 10.5 miles from the village of Monsaraz. Don't know if this map helps! I would recommend both Monsaraz and the restaurant - Reguengos is not special but you need to go through it to go from one to the other.

Thanks for that - maybe they'd allow an overnight stop 'Britstops' style?

I doubt it - it is quite posh, lots of big cars there, but it wasn't expensive for what it was - it cost us about E114 for 5 courses and a glass of wine per course, for 2 of us. Of course it will be more now because the pound has fallen. It is not well-known amongst Brits, we were the only ones there and I only knew about it because my cousin has lots of property around there.

Well, we haven't got to Spain yet but we are veeeeery slooowly on our way south.
Now at one of our favourite places, La Mailleraye- sur-Seine, and as the sun is shining we are staying for a couple of days before going on.
At this rate it might be a while before we see Portugal. :)

At last we have made it into Spain after a very leisurely tour through France.
Now on a tiny aire in the small town of
Torquemada in the middle of Spain and another Brit Carthago has turned up.
It is non other than @Robert Clark, well known in this parish. :)

When we pulled into the Aire I said to Mrs C "there's a van just like ours, you don't see many of them. I wonder if...,?"

Just goes to show what a small world it is.
