I think I need to get onboard with a tablet. I don't use a smart phone...not used swiping and finger controls and though I have 3 desktop PC s and 2 laptops and use windows 7 ..I feel I don't want this technology to leave me behind.

I have read the Blackberry PB thread and researched Google 7 and samsung offerings strangely the best specked 7 inch jobbies seem to be cheap imports on ebay.

Now some of the specs seem mad.

Would I design a small handheld that didn't have an expandable storage slot like SD > NO !

Do I want to use Iplayer...............YES Will it play Divx/ mpeg4 and downloaded films/tv ..yes please.

Radio ...would be useful

A really good navigation ability would be good

HD out to TV would seem uselful

Brouse the web.......yes please

Email ...of course

Simple to use.....Yes I have only a few brian cells left

Good screen.......quality image as I need reading glasses.

Cost..............dont want to pay Apple prices and dont want an apple

Simple transfer of info from computer to device...could it just show up as another drive to makle things simple ? My MP3 player is drop and drag.

And a good music player would mean I could leave my MP3 player at home

Camera............front and back might be good//with a reasonalbe number of mega pixels and a half decent lens

I want it all ....does it exist ? I cant seem to find it

HELP !!!!!

So would the cheap and popular playbook do most of this ??

Its so confusing comparing all the specs and never having purcheased an Ap in my life

Im guessing they are little adapted specialist programmes.

But if I have a film on say divx/mpeg 4...........how do I get it onto the playbook if I cant plug a stick in ?

i don't know about the playbook , but with the app for the nexus you can load your films and music on to the memory stick and play from there , the otg cables are about £3

I think you can count on being able to plug into the USB of a PC and doing drag and drop, I can on my 3 Androids. I can also do file transfers by WiFi.

The £169 ( with cashback ) Samsung Galaxy 2 makes a good stab at your needs but seems to be missing GPS.

The Nexus 16G looks excellent, very high res screen, just lacking plug in memory. 16G with a movie being about 2G lets you carry at least 6 movies. Asus quality.

I will try to answer your questions on this with relation to the Playbook as it is the only tablet I have.

SD card. No it doesn't have one but it is 64GB which is a shed load of space for media. I have 3 complete tv series on mine and still loads of space left.

iPlayer. It has the BBC iPlayer app installed out of the box.
It plays mp4 files. I have ripped hundreds of DVD's and it plays them without issue. Divx I don't know tbh as I am not a fan.

Radio. I don't think it has a radio reciever built in. Not something I use. But the web browser is good so online radio may be an option?

It does have sat nav apps available. I couldn't comment on them though as I use a TomTom. I will be looking into this later.

HD out. yes it has an HDMI port.

Webbrowser is brilliant and supports flash.

Email. Being a Blackberry it has some of the best communications software around. Even better when combined with a BB phone.

Simple to use. I think they are all much of a muchness on this front. I had no problems and was wizzing around on it straight out of the box. No manual needed. Just need to know the bezel is touch sensitive too and has some additional swipes you can do using the bezel which are really usefull.

Good screen. I was blown away by the video quality. I now watch my film, tv progs on it rather than on my 1920x1200 laptop screen.

Cost.. Not seen anything of this spec any cheaper. £129 for a 64GB tablet is brilliant.

File transfer. Yes you can drag and drop but you do need to install the drivers. It is a pain but doesn't take long.

I haven't tried the music player yet... The built in one looks a bit basic but there are plenty of others in the app store. I will stick with the built in one and add the iTunes sync utility.

Surprisingly good camera built in... Back one is capable of filming in 1080p I have been told. I took some pictures in my mums front room and was impressed. At low light there is some noise though. You will never get the same quality as you will out of a dedicated camera.

Anyway, in summary. I am well happy with it and think it is excellent value for money. £129 for a quality device that comes with 64GB of memory.:thumb:

I have just tested the 1080p video facility and I am seriously impressed.

I have put a very small clip up here. You might want to download it to view it rather than streaming it...

Please note I just jumped out of the van and took this no planning. It is dusk here so light is not 100%. But it should give you some idea of the 1080p capabilities of the camera.

I agree with Karl's review .. :thumb:

Great bit of kit ..

I've also played with video and music , the music player is very good, I've loaded it with about two thousand songs and it lists them by album, artist, genre and song title.
For radio I use an app called Nobex ..

I 've also tried the HDMI connection to my telly .. great for giving slide shows and playing movies.

For file transfer I use the usb cable and also have it networked wirelessly to the home network for file sharing ..

Now the bad bits:

No support for Skype .. that could be a deal breaker for some.. but it may be availably with the next software upgrade.

I use a BB phone and can't sync contacts except by using a mail provider such as Google mail.. Why this wasn't included with the 'bridge' connection only RIM know .. very poor in my opinion.

I've used the GPS , but it is very slow to get a fix and when driving it loses it quite regularly .. I don't think I would depend on it as a sat nav .. even in the open air it drifts about

Can't use the usb for connecting to an external device.. such as a camera or pen drive.. now this is a bit disappointing as I want to download pictures from my camera when on holiday .. lots of discussion about this on Crackberry, apparently the usb port would support it with the right software .. hopefully RIM will make this available with the next upgrade.

It won't charge from the lappy, but it will maintain the battery level, nor have I been able to get it to charge in the car using a 12v Trust power supply unit with a 5v/2A usb charge port .. maybe the cable ? .. jury is out on this one ....

It's bottom end spec, modest screen, modest memory, crap camera.

No GPS and no mention of battery life.

Probably just about right for the price, just.
