At a show last year I guy was showing me the SOG system. For those who don't know its a extractor fan with charcoal filter that you hook up to your karzee. Result = no nasty niffs.

I didn't buy one as I was going to buy a new van.

But Mr Salesman said to me, "With this you can empty your cassette down your own WC - you don't need to use a disposal point".

Now I'm pretty sure that when I empty my cassette on a campsite it joins the unmentionables from the WCs the other side of the wall and said as much. "Oh no says Mr Salesman you must use a disposal point - you can't put down your home thunder box".

I don't have a septic tank :ROFLMAO: and even if I did I believe formaldehyde is not (often) used because Damien Hirst's pickling factory has created a shortage.

So Mr Salesman is talking err, a load of twaddle. Or is he???

Your thoughts please...

If you have any doubts just look at the "Lovely Dubai" thread in the U shaped lounge. That should sort all your worries :winky:

I think some sites do have a bio tank with living bacteria breaking down the waste into bio friendly manure. If you add formaldehyde based chemical the bacteria and the process stops.

Fantastic bit of kit.

No smel in the motorhome, but you can empty in your home WC.
But I whould not recomend it.
Its not the best smelling thing for the man that has to empty it.

But if no where else you can empty it in public toilet.
But you may have to defend yourself that it is not whith chemicals.

People just presume it is a chemical toilet.

Only had that once in the 3 years.

Just make sure the filter does not exit the motorhome on the awning side.

You can get SOG 2 that exits via the floor.
The SOG 1 exits via the casset door

most responsible campsites do have a separate holding tank for black waste (elsan point) and it does not end up in the normal sewer.

i tried to explain to one site warden that i needed to flush my black tank discharge hose with grey water to clean it out before storing it away.
his response was...you ain't filling my tank with your dish water at my expense...the site has to pay for disposal.

once i explained i don't use any chemicals at all and theres only water and sh/t in there he let me dump down the normal sewer manhole...saving himself money in the process.

When a site cesspit is emptied, it goes into either a holding tank to mix with animal waste nd then goes back on the land, OR, it goes to the treatment plant, where SOME dry it and make it into cakes, which are sold to farmers..again for use in fertilising the land (under strict controls, as mr farmer likes this stuff and may use too much). Anything containing chemicals, gets treated totally differently, goes in a different tank, a different truck and cannot contaminate the water supply.

Most sites and CL's i see have elsan points that are direct to the sewer main.

We use bio washing liquid in our cassette these days but used Thetford/Elsan chemicals in the past. Every time we come home with a cassette that needs emptying it goes down the downstairs WC - where else would we be supposed to empty it? ::bigsmile:

Methinks Mr Salesman was talking a load of twaddle ::bigsmile:

From GO OUTDOORS website.

Some toilet chemical designed to break down waste matter are toxic, and can contain formaldehyde. Other toilet chemicals are made without formaldehyde so are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

Formaldehyde is used in a variety of other professions, and is a strong chemical which is also used in embalming!

The reason formaldehyde is used in toilet chemicals is because it is such an effective product. It is worth noting that due to it’s strength, formaldehyde is a toxic chemical, which means it can be harmful if used incorrectly.

If you are disposing of water that has been treated with formaldehyde, ensure it is placed in the correct area. Dumping this waste water inappropriately can cause serious harm to the environment as it is very toxic to wildlife, so take caution if you do choose to use this type of chemical. Household bleaches won’t be suitable as they contain high amounts of chemicals not suited to a portable toilet that can harm the way it functions.

from the camping and caravanning club.....

The first rule of chemical toilets is that you must only empty them in a specifically designated place. Apart from the obvious hygiene issues, the chemicals should not go straight into the sewerage system.

Another reason not to use chemicals in the loo. SOG or not, we've not used chemicals for years, just don't see the point. Empty once a day, no need.

Same here...I'm still using the Thetford stuff I bought ages ago and when I return home it goes down the toilet. Is that the wrong thing to do?

I was under the impression that nowadays none of the Thetford chemicals contain formaldehyde.

An elderly friend of the family had a outdoor loo now I'm pretty sure she didn't take the bucket to a campsite to dispose of the contents.

I think we need a bit of a specialist to provide the answer to this question. Anyone from Thetford or Dometic looking in?

the sensible thing to do here is if you are using chemicals in your mobile bog buy the environment friendly ones that can be dumped in the normal sewer system.
i thought that some CL's used to state that they had a septic tank and required biodegradable toilet fluids to be used.
where as others state own sanitation required (meaning take it home with you)

I must admit that is the case do the female species ever empty it? I sat watching on site this morning (nothing better to do) and saw about 12 guys going to empty their tanks not one woman :roflmto:

chemical wcs

I empty mine, and i have seen a few other women also.

However, after discussing this with Jim last year, i have gone the
' no chemical, daily empty' routine.

Have tried various additives, that don't seem to make a lot of difference.
Saves money by not using anything and either way, it never smells nice :ROFLMAO:

One less thing to carry!

Thetford Aqua Kem Blue - no Formaldehyde.

And every other solution I can find says - Formaldehyde free.

So my 1's and 2's can't go down a WC (even on a septic tank) at home or away?

if it says on the tub biodegradable safe for septic tanks you can more or less dump it in a hole in your front lawn

Bio Logical

You should be aware that a sewage system may be damaged by the use of bio fluids (washing powder). ask the site owner if he has a problem with bio products. It's quite likely sites are not connected, directly, if at all, to a main sewer, due to their location.

Dont even go there......Your eyes must see only what they want then, plenty of women empty their cassettes, some even have had to double decant (as such) from a black tank to a hog and from the hog to the elsan point.

One of the reasons you were told not to empty the old blue additive down your house toilet is because it ate into the glaze on the toilet

I thought it meant you need your own receptacle as they don't have one, though they do have facilities for emptying the cassette/bucket

Yeah as in; you need your own WC as we don't have public toilets?
