The app I use is "Say Hi". It is spoken and displays the translation. Not so good if you don't know the language at all, but fine for most applications.

I bought the collins french book, with vocab, structure etc. Remembered a fair bit from school. Babbel however, just charge £6 something a month to learn online. Well worth it. Also as someone above said, even using bonjour, merci, sil vous plait, non, oui etc will go a long way. Nothing more ignorant than going to another country and not even trying. Well done you for having a go :)

We were sat in a restaurant in Honfleur when I heard a couple talking 4 tables away and heard the lady say 'roast beef'. I immediately replied Oui Madame, nous sommes roast beef! she apologised profusely but it was all taken in good fun. When they were leaving they sent a caraffe of wine over to us! We generally find most of them nice people but they chatter at a rate of knots very difficult to follow.

When we first moved over here my French was terrible, ok it's still not great but I manage to be understood. I never knew if item were m or f so didn't know where to ask for un or une, the solution was to ask for deux!
No wonder I put on so much weight.

:LOL:You shouldn't worry that much ... I still look in the dictionary what is feminine or masculine when it is new to me!! Even a native is not a dictionary you know!! You can't be specialised in all the possible subjects , and so I don't know the gender of quite a few words indeed!!

Iv'e just met a nice lady on the canal towpath at Tenteniac whilst walking the pooch.
She also had a dog & whilst they were exchanging friendly sniffs she started talking rapidly to me.
I waited for her to stop for air then I smiled and gave her my best yet rendition of desolee,je ne parlais pas francais.
She then continued talking to me in rapid french.eventually with body language i got it across that the dog is a whippet,we both smiled politely then continued our walks.
I was really chuffed with my little attempt at saying i cant speak french.
Ah well, keep on trying. Christ knows how we'll get on in spain & portugal!!!
