Our toad is 2014 vintage and doesn't have TPMS (as far as I know anyway)

Of course it doesn't...

Very few have vehicles have TPMS fitted as standard and if they do it's normally on expensive saloons and even then it's an extra.

The TPMS in the car does not indicate pressure in PSI, just gives green for OK red for low pressure

Just works on rolling circumference, low pressure so tyre will have smaller circumference as so have to rotate faster than correct pressure tyres. It also compares this speed to the reference speed when reset

How does that work?

Flat tyre rotates faster. My wife's new Suzuki uses this method for its TPMS I believe.
