Wellhouse Leisure drives off with Hyundai contract
A FIRM making high-class motorhomes has signed a major international deal.
Shepley-based Wellhouse Leisure – which has already increased its workforce from nine to 30 in the past two years – has entered an agreement to build camper vans for Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company.
The move is expected to create a further two or three jobs and will lift turnover for the Barnsley Road firm by about £3m over the next two years.
Wellhouse Leisure expects to build up to two camper vans a week under the agreement for sale at its own outlets and throughout the Hyundai dealer network.
Managing director David Elliott said: “Wellhouse Leisure has steadily grown from three employees in 2003 to nine at the time of the recession in 2008 – but in the last two years we have seen fantastic growth and have now grown to 30 staff.
“We have taken on a new factory as well as entering into other sectors of the industry such as wholesale parts to other camper conversion companies all over the UK.
“This has gone from nothing to £1m a year turnover in just nine months.
“We have also set up two sub-contracting outlets in Inverness, Scotland, and Cornwall where our campers will be built and sold.”
This year the company expects to build 120 vehicles. Next year, thanks to the Hyundai deal, it is set to build 150.

He said: “We are delighted that a company the size of Hyundai has seen the build quality of a Yorkshire company’s manufacturing expertise.”
Wellhouse Leisure received help in planning for the new project from Business Link Yorkshire and the Manufacturing Advisory Service.
The new camper van is based on Hyundai’s i800 MPV and will sell for £33,000 on the forecourt.
Features of the converted vehicle include four berths, compressor fridge, combined hob and sink, mini-oven and grill, a heating and hot water system, an elevating roof, tailgate shower and a whole lot more.
The collaboration with Hyundai makes Wellhouse the Korean company’s first ever motor caravan converter.
Mr Elliott said: “Hyundai have been brilliant in supporting this. We have massive plans for the year ahead and this is just one such project.”
Wellhouse Leisure is billed as the UK’s leading compact camper van converter. It already specialises in importing a wide range of Japanese vehicles for conversion into quality campers with prices starting at £11,000.
It is also an official UK agent for leading German component supplier Reimo.
Facilities at Wellhouse Leisure’s Shepley base include a state-of-the-art paintshop, workshop and MoT servicing.
A keen camper van fan, Mr Elliott set up Deepcar Motorhomes with his father in 1995 before launching Wellhouse Leisure in 2002.
Wellhouse has sold more than 1,000 campers in the past eight years.
