Hi

I am looking to buy a used Hymer 522 circa 2006. The early ones have the Ford 2 litre engine and late rthe 2.2 litre. Does anyone know if there are any major disadvantages with the smaller engine. We ahve found a nice van at at fair price and our only concern is the older engine and gearchange.

Thanks ollie

my woeks van is a 2006 pre facelift (floor gearstick)
from new had progressive trouble selecting 1-and -2 gear
had to select 2 then 1 at the first start in the day

fleet contractor said nothing wrong
took it to fords quick bullshine check told its fixed

seemed a bit better wrong

took it back to an alternative ford main stealer
after consultation with fleet manager

fords said cant do it today
so had to unload all tools into company rental van

dealer called later to find out what the prob was
told him wait till the morning and drive it you will find out

they ended up dropping the gearbox out
came back no probs since and gear box is a treat
can even change up and down without the clutch
previousley couldnt change gear with the clutch

other than that couple of brake light bulbs
and a few auxillary batteries but the comunications and other electrics
fitted ruin them

Both engines are OK. Just check that the injectors are quiet (not too muck deisel knock) and not too smokey as it could point to an injector fault or the more common EGR fault.

I has a 2 litre 125bhp on a 3.5ton luton and it had bags of power. We needed a full set of injectors fitting at 16000 miles due to smoking and knocking. Ford seem to have problems with injectors for some reason. Mine were under warranty and the fault was sorted at no cost to me.

We have a a Hymer Van 522 on a 57 reg with the 2.2 litre engine. It is great to drive (and park) and achieves about 31-2 mpg.

Our only problem is my wife doesn't like the transverse fixed bed for the usual reasons!

Sorry if I should know this but we are looking at one of these for our first motor home...

What are the usual reasons?
