We'd like to start thinking about this and see where it takes us.
We'd like to find an American couple who'd be interested in exchanging vans for 3 months. They'd fly to somewhere in Europe to take possession of ours and we go to hopefully the west coast to take theirs. This would be after prolonged discussion and a build up of trust and information
Does anyone have any idea where to start or know of anyone who has done this or generally have any info or thoughts on this?
Many thanks in advance

We registered on motor swap forum and spent all evening describing our van etc to find they are reconstructing the website! We knew this would take ages which is why we've started this early.
Not planning to go before spring or fall 2018 though could be persuaded to go earlier if the right match occurs
Already we've learned that insurance for a foreigner in the UK is very hard to find and pricey so we were thinking we could do the swap from Spain or France. But then would we want a French or Spanish insurance handler dealing with our claim? Hmm the process continues!

French or Spanish insurers aren't going to insure a UK registered van no matter who's driving.

Spanish insurance companies will insure UK registered vehicles, but you would need to have a rental agreement and NIE number.
But it's not cheap and probably not worth the paper it's written on.
But the policy is for the vehicle here, so anyone normally over 25 can drive it. Bob.

But is that for a Spanish national to insure a UK van ?
Surely, same as UK, you need a Spanish address.

Yes John, an address renting / buying or maybe even a campsite, because we have friends from Holland that stay on the campsite regestured for NIE so they know who you are and have a car here. :) Bob.

Living the dream.
I know somebody who did a house swap in Scotland for one in the USA. The yanks got a very nice but small terraced house and a Ford Mondeo and the Scotts got a five bedroom ranch style bungalow, a bmw suv and the use of a very large RV. They were there for a month and stayed two weeks in the house and the second two weeks in the RV leaving it at the airport for the returning American family so it does work.
When on a visit to family in Canada all I had to do was produce the picture driving licence and was put on aunts insurance with no charge.
