I think that would be the safe option, the 7 year change seems to get repeated quite a lot on here, must be some truth or a very good scam by the tyre makers (y)

A set of four tyres , say £500 that's £71 a year for safety and peace of mind , probably not too much .
Mine takes 6 tyres and personally I change them every six years.

We recommend:

All tires (including spare tires) that were manufactured more than ten years ago should be replaced with new tires, even if they appear to be usable from their external appearance and if the tread depth may have not reached the minimum wear out depth.

Good job I'm British then:):)

I think it depends on how the spare will be used. I regard mine as means to get somewhere to have the original repaired or replaced - I wouldn't expect to run any further on it and I'd expect to take great care if it was a little ancient. I normally take one of the running tyres as a spare when they are being replaced - at 7 years in my case.
