how long is a bit of string

What does it cost.. how long is a bit of string?

Not the lowest budget I have seen. So what effects the budget?

How old are you prepared to accept as a motorhome

Are you prepared to do work on one yourself and how handy are you at DIY or mechanics

How many berths does it have to have?

As you can see from magazines like MMM or even ebay you will soon find out what you get for your money... just be careful what you payout for the dream, because it is a dream regardless how old or new it might be.

You can get an idea of insurance rates.. MOT depends on condition. Running costs vary widely if a diesel or petrol.. are you intending to go into the London LEZ (Older diesels will not comply).

Take it step at a time.. most owners often take a year or more to find a suitable motorhome.. as I said depends on the budget.. worth also talking to some motorhome dealers as they may have older motorhomes taken in px .. you may get lucky.

Think about if you are using it for weekends or longer trips.. would a van conversion be better.. some of the map importers do Bongos converted under £10K.. but only good for weekend use.

Wish you lots of luck

depending on what you buy
how long is a length of string?

at £10K you looking at an older unit
how well has it been maintained?
for example for you

I got a great deal on a 1999 American RV value £28K
paid £20K in 2009

then the bad news
brakes went cost £850
fridge went coat £1300
added solar panel £650
added top box £450
service new belts £390
new air ride needed £240

cost to run is £o.40p/mile
insurance £389.00
road tax £168

for us it is worth every penny
others might say it not so good

if you have to ask how much is it? maybe you should not have it
they are an expensive item to buy to insure and to run

hope this helps

all that said you probably wont go too far wrong with an old transit base for your first as they can be repaired by anyone for a cup of tea and a biscuit well not quite but nearly.
other than that maybe one based on the LDV 400 as they used the same transit engine on most but out of the 2 the transit is the better one.
a quick scoot on ebay got these.

Hi MET... Welcome...

When we started looking we though about a similar budget, but ended up spending considerably more than that in the end.

Monthly costs..... different for everyone and every vehicle.

Total your annual fixed costs like tax, insurance MOT, servicing etc. For us that would be approx £600+ /year so allow £60 month for starters.

Now also allow for repairs needed for the MOT, possible breakdowns etc, fuel, site costs if you intend using sites etc.

But then offset how much you would spend on UK or foreign holidays or even short breaks.

With the motorhome you have the freedom to set off at will, be it 20 miles up the road or over to the continent, all at your own pace and in your own time scale. You could spend a month in France pottering around, using mainly aires for just a few hundred pounds including your fuel and ferries, be there one of you, or four of you.

Just go for it....:thumb::thumb::thumb:
