How long does it take to cross Northern Spain from the French boarder to get in to Portugal .. i.e coming down from Calais not off the Santander Ferry.

Also what is the roads like and stopping points etc.,

Takes me about 9 hours in the car Calais to about Bourdeaux, but that's in my car. So you'd have to compare that leg with the ones across Spain and into Portugal.

If you look at mappy http://fr.mappy.com/itinerary_homepage you can put in stages of the journey and it will give you distances, times and there are different permutations, e.g avoid toll roads. I find mappy to be accurate. You can also select the fuel you use and type of vehicle,

A lot would depend on how you want to cross Spain as there are a lot of routes to Portugal. maybe this site may help you choose.

All the roads across Spain are good, some are more mountainous than others
as you approach and enter Portugal.

The route along the northern coast of Spain
Irun-Gijon-Corunna-Vigo-Valenca(P)has the choice of motorway with some tolls
or national which is hilly and winding but very nice.

The central route Irun-Burgos-Valladolid-Salamanca-Vilar Formosa(P)
brings you into central Portugal.Probably the most popular route as you could then choose to head north or south as you like.
Sorry never clocked distances and time depend more on how you wish to travel.

Spain to Portugal

From the French/Spanish border to Salamanca is about 41/2 hours 280miles. Take the national road Burgos,Vallolidad. At junction225 just before Salamanca there is a lovely site, very reasonable and two minutes of the motorway, garage just outside as well. Nice bar and food on site. Next day just go on into Portugal and turn right or left. Hope you have a nice trip.

I was travelling that way in 1990, with my mate in a LT35 van, on our tour of Europe. We left a campsite in France (near the boarder with Spain) one morning and stopped in a layby in Portugal that evening before dark. That was central Portugal but I cannot remember the route.

Calais-Rouen-Le mans-Tours-Poitiers-Saintes-Bordeaux-Irun is 1100km

averaging say 60kph thats around 17hours solid driving, all good National roads

Irun to Vigo is around 1000kms following the northern coast of Spain
and the road unless you travel on motorway is hard going, I would say
20hours for this route

Irun-Vitoria-Burgos-Valladolid-Salamanca-Vila Formosa is 600km
averaging the same 60kph that would be a further 10 hours

so total 27 hours, as only you know what your comfortable with driving daily

I would say five days would be realistic.

hi ,best not be in a hurry . keep the sea on the right and try to be on the rioad nearest the sea . there are so many nice places along the coast you might never get too portugal.
that coast is one of my favourite routes of all time . becareful east side of ribadesella gets very narrow .and also further along in luarca . thats narrow in the town. too narrow. but the scenery is fantastic . its a trip of its own. puts the rest of spain to shame. galecia is special again . lovely place.
