I've just found this which might be useful:

......my enjoyment of win8 increased 100x once I disabled the edge swipe function of the touchpad. Your path might be slightly different but the synaptics touchpad is control panel / hardware and sound / mouse / device settings / settings / edge swipe -- and disable "enable edge swipes"

this stops the maddening context changes when browsing the web or doing anything on the touch pad really....you can still access the charms on the upper or lower right, and you can still access the history fro the upper left after you disable this...but it is much more controlled.
.............

start button

select 'control panel'

select 'clock, language and region'

under 'date and time', select 'add the clock gadget to the desktop'

from the displayed icons, right click the clock icon and select uninstall.
