although i normally advise driving slow . he does seem to have not been driving fast enough or he might have just made it . you do have to give it a bit of wellie if doing stunts like that.

Sat-nav tourist's van wrecked at Devon bridge

A holidaymaker checking his sat-nav wrecked his camper van after he failed to see a low bridge sign.

The Cheshire holidaymaker was trying to find his campsite in Devon but ended up wedged under a bridge said police.

He crashed into the structure at Littlehempston near Totnes on Wednesday.

"He wasn't paying attention to the road signs warning of a low bridge and ended up turning his camper van into a sardine can," said a police spokesman.

"If you drive a large vehicle, please be aware that sat-navs don't warn you of low bridges."
The camper van was later retrieved by a recovery firm and the bridge suffered "minimal damage".

"minimal damage"???? I will be much more aware from now on, Cant believe a sat nav has done all that damage, how bloody big was the suction cup to hold it on the screen!?

One thing about this, how do you stand on insurance, if you have a van that's a damp filled nail , could you just run it into a bridge and draw?(n)

Related - does anybody know if the height warnings refer to the maximum at the top of the arch... or the minimum at the lowest part of the arch ???

I was looking at the Norwich C&CC site for a wee trip out next week & I noticed two of the three access roads are under 'low' bridges signed at 10'3"
My van is 10 ft including aerials etc so should be ok, but would it be because they're arched bridges not flat.

*Don't worry, I'm not going to risk it if I go - just wondered if anyone knew

I know I'm pushing the bounds of credulity - but that particular sign doesn't have whether its metric or imperial measurement.
Would the driver have a case, insurance-wise?

since oct 97any vehicle over 3mtr should have a visible marking showing its height for the driver .
letter must be at least 40mm high. there are get out but if yours is over or even just high best know its height . i like width etc as well .

Are we looking at the front or the back of the vehicle? If it drove under the bridge, you would think it would have collapsed the other way.
It's the front I think. The number plate appears to be white rather than yellow.
