Hi all,
We are due to go to Parc Verger and for a couple of weeks in France from Wednesday the 13th August. However we have hit a major problem.
The lady that had agreed to have our dog has now informed us that she sadly can not have her. This leaves us with a dilema. What do we do with Tara when we go away? we were unable to get a pet passport in time as we were already in to the time span when we took her on.
We have been to see some kennels this am and TBH were really unimpressed with what we saw. They appeared quite noisey and although the dogs appeared well enough looked after some were actually physically shaking.

As Tara has just been housed with us only 5 months ago and having had to do a lot of work to alter her behaviour, we don't want her in that environment whereby all our work will be undone.

Have any funsters used a dog sitting service? is there such a thing or did I dream it? Any full time funsters want a free pitch with electric for a couple of weeks use of a house tied in with some dog sitting? please PM me.

If we can't work this problem out then sadly we will not be able to attend the parc verger meet, and with the weather the way it is in this country at the moment we could do with a sunny break.

Not much use to you in the UK, but House/Pet sitting is very popular down here in Southern Spain. I have a friend who does it as a small business, covering several houses at a time……..

Must be something along those lines in the UK…….Why not have a look on the Ad’s notices that are in most Vet’s………..

Never ever found a satisfactory boarding kennel. Your best bet is to find a family friend or funster to look after her. Give me a shout if you get really stuck

Paul, welcome to thr real world of owning pet, however as Tara is still young its an ideal time to get her use to Kennels

however given her unsettled start in life i would suggest that if you are going to use a Kennels you, First for a few hours then put her in for 1 night then a weekend and then finally for the two weeks, that way she will fret less as she knows you are coming back for her

We put Sonny in a Kennels who specialise in big dogs and run Rotty rescue, however it will be half an hours run for you

I think Blisters idea is good, get her used to kennels now because you never know when you may need to use them again.
I don't know whereabouts you are in Cheshire, but there is one just north of Whitchurch which we have used once when our normal one couldn't fit Jazz & Sage in at short notice, and they were well looked after there, the lady in charge was very nice.

Hi Paul and Nikki

If you can get Tara DOWN to us in London

We will have her while you go to parc verger You could drop her off on the way dependent where you are getting the ferry crossing to france.

With no motorhome we arent now going away anywhere and are happy to help out xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

There is no way we would let strangers into our house to pet sit and if the house does happen to get burgled you may find problems with your insurance company.

absolutely nothing wrong with most kennels but insist on looking around and ask questions....if other dog owners are there ask them if they've been before.

we very rarely put ours in kennels any more but because of cost not poor kennels.....4 dogs @ £10 each per day is a drain on funds.

we usually pressgang / bribe / threaten one of the kids into staying with them:thumb:

dog kennels, by their very nature, are noisy places......one dog barks and the chain starts.

in my experience the 'shaking' dogs are the ones who lead a very pampered and sheltered life.
because of where we live ours are free to roam and never go more than a couple of hundred yards from home and are used to other people/dogs and are quite happy in kennels when we do leave them.

Hi Paul,
Have looked on line for kennels near us in North Wales but could'nt see anything I liked.
We have a cat and no fencing around most of the garden, with in our paddock our neighbour's sheep. Otherwise we would have her.
What kennel does her vet recommend?

Hi
We collected our gang - 3 GSD's today from the kennels after our France trip, they had been there once before a few years back as mainly we have a house sitter who works full time but looks after them well (we also had parrots then too)

The kennels we used has a majority of gundogs, having had gundogs in the past thought that they would be a quieter type kennel also not wanting bad habits to take shape

They have very aired large kennels and are very clean they did let me bring their food so as not to upset their feed routine etc and adjusted the costs for me(all helps)

The kennels are near Swansea which is prob too far for you but perhaps there could be a similar type near you

Wish we could have Tara with us but at mo not poss due to staffing probs with our garage so am needed full time there, another time

Hoping sorted soon

Newgate Wilmslow

Hi there- read your post- I too had a very similar dilemma as my boxer Sheba who joined me last summer is also a rescue dog & had spent a year in Kennels whilst here last owners were prosecuted before coming to me.
At first i was loathe to put her in kennels for exactly the same reasons as yourselves so used services wherein she stayed in other people's homes. On the whole very good- however they become involved with other people's habits etc- I had a note sent back with her telling me she loved hobnobs-of course she does' she's a dog- doesn't mean she should have them though!
I then sent her the Newgate kennels in Wilmslow- where unsurprisingly there is a waiting list there because they are excellent- she goes in wagging, comes out wagging and smells of Vanilla! They are very strict about inoculations, always ask about health, diet as she goes in and very importantly, because she is in a routine, I do not have to spend a week retraining her when she returns.
I'm a new motorhomer- having just bought a camper this week- eek! (Tribute 550 2009- I will check for reversing judder before I pick it up- promise!) Myself and the Shebster are off around France & Spain from Aug- to Sept so no kennels for her at the moment!

Our local vets have a list of kennels they recommend so may be worth talking to your vet or try Petpals - Pet sitting, dog walking, dog sitting, dog boarding, pet boarding, cat sitting and pet taxi - The alternative to boarding kennels and catteries They are a franchised group. We have used 2 people in different areas from this service for dog walking and looking after our pets and they have both been really good. The current chap we use is fantastic and has dogs to stay at his house rather than put them into kennels.
Good luck

May I thank all the kind funsters on here whom offered so much advice, information and even offers,. Thankyou so much were touched.

We have now sorted the problem,:thumb: Tara is going to a well respected Kennels where I have visited and checked them through. A small concern where she will be fed her favourite tripe for 2 weeks./.
We dont want to take her abroad so she will need to get used to it for whan we go skiing, which im sure she will.:thumb:

So crack open the wine in parc verger, and light up the BBq panic over. :Eeek:

So glad you got it sorted:thumb: if we weren't going to parc verger we would have had her she is so gorgeous, just a ? to ask your kennel,s have they had any instances of kennel cough there, reason for asking ? when we put our dog into kennels (as we thought that if we left him at home with the kids he wouldn't get fed, or walked etc) but when the kids went to visit him he had caught kennel cough:Eeek: the kids took him out and straight to the vet it was a while before he was right again, luckily though his vet fees were covered by pet insurance. I am sure that Tara will be fine, but due to that one bad experience never put ours in kennels again. So if no one was able to look after him for us we didn't go.

Roll on parc verger, I am counting down the days!!!!

see you there

Hi Ruth and thanks for the warning. However my pocket is £23 lighter and tara has had her kennel cough vaccination. The kennels are very strict nowadays in making sure ALL vacinations are up to date.

Hi Paul, yes my dogs vacs were also up up to date, and the kennels were supposed to check, but they obviously didn't check someone's,( or someone cheated) but glad that Tara will be well looked after but then how could you not look after Tara you only have to look at her and she has you hook line and sinker::bigsmile: ps: btw we didnot pay the kennels told them to sue if they wanted the money, never heard anything though

Glad you have sorted Tara out.We have a GSD called Remy and he travels with us everywhere. He loves the RV life and sulks big time when we come home. On another note, I noticed that a lot of you go to Parc Verger. This is on our list to visit, so any comments would be appreciated.Have not been there before but they have had good write ups in the ARVE mag.:thumb:

Some people we know do house sitting and looking after pets in your own home while people go away on holiday works out about the same or cheaper than putting pets in kennels. They wont look after spiders or snakes but have looked after other types of animals.
If anyone ever needs their email/phone I can pass it on.

Kennels or House sit

Pleased you have got Tara sorted out with Kennels. I was just going to suggest Housecarers.com. We are members of the site it was a friend of our in Australia who suggested it when we were travelling. We did a 10 day house sit in New Zealand looking after a Jack Russel and 2 cats and 3 sheep although we gained
an extra cat as a stray kitten moved in through the cat door and we did not have the heart to throw it out.
There is no payment for doing this you just get to see a different area and save on travelling costs. Most people ask for referances. The only cost to us was our site membership

i am a pet/house sitter. as we charge mileage it's always better to get someone local. i just do southern counties.

only downside is that most customers don't want you to take your own dog.
