I have a friend in Spain who is hoping to be able to watch the BBC on their PC. Now I dont know a lot but I was under the impression that the BBC blocked all non UK IP addresses.

I think HMA is a fee paying product, I am aware that TOR is open source.

Which is the better option? Or is there another 'free' option that they could use?
Both individuals are NOT techie..

Not heard of either of those but Filmon still gets UK channels but needs a decent internet connection which is usually not available via site wi fi.

Not sure if it works but take a look at hidemyass.com

I believe it shows you how to make your IP address not national specific and therefore allows PC's access to the BBC whilst overseas.

I've just reread your initial mail and realise that you refer to HMA which must be Hidemyass,

Sorry, I should have read it properly the first time.

This one works well for me

I've found this VPN service very reliable, not free but quite reasonable at £3.99 a month, makes it look like you are in the UK and also hides your true location from any undesirables.
They are a group of individuals around the world working together to provide a service.
Their support service is very good, at one point I got an answer within a few minutes from a guy who happened to be out walking up Scafell at the time, and he was very helpful and right.
Good Luck
