I'm a great fan of lidl...but their baked beans are from another planet....rather strange. Anyone else had the "pleasure"

barry
We use Lidl and Aldi all the time, (mainly so that no-one realises quite how inordinately well off we are :thumb:) and I think their beans are quite tasty, although they do on occasion resemble lead shot :Eeek:.
The sauce also seems to be somewhat darker than other brands.

Tesco Value Baked Beans still hold the award for the worst I've ever tasted, back when they were 1p / can!!! :whatthe:

Can anyone else remember that??

just had a look and there is no mention of the word gluten on the label anywhere ::bigsmile:

Next time I spot a tin I'll have to read the ingredients then. The labeling requirements are a mess at present and full of contradictions and loop holes. At one time they could say "gluten free" - that has changed and they may (or may not) say "contains gluten" or "made in a factory where gluten is present" - if it doesn't say "contains gluten" it still might poison me as I can't assume that it's okay. We were promised the new legislation would make it easier - maybe it does for the producer! Some companies ignore the labeling requirements and still say "gluten free" - Aldi's food often says "gluten free" but often on very odd items like milk or cooking oil which should never contain gluten anyway!

Can any of the Branston fans check on the label to see if they are gluten free? It should say if they contain gluten or are made in a factory that handles gluten. Thanks!

Looked on label and nothing (can just see the funsters in various kitchens trotting off to have a look ) :ROFLMAO: but if you google Branston they have a question page just fill it in and your answer should come back.

I've emailed them so will see what comes back. The Coeliac Society's book is a joke and still lists food as being safe when it changed recipe over 10 years ago! Unfortunately caterers and hospitals rely on the book and people get ill.

Lidl have a Contact form so it might be worth asking the as well. One of our daughters in law is gluten intolerant so we understand the problem.

One of our sons was telling us a tale recently of somebody opening a can of beans to find only sauce. The manufacturer (can't remember which one) was annoyed because the sauce is the expensive ingredient, the beans cost very little

They said to read the label - which didn't help.

The last tin I got from Aldi were okay but it's a long way to Aldi.

Not good. I should have thought they would be more helpful.

I should take it higher and point out the potential customer relations benefits.

Quite like the beans but not the sauce, so usually prefer the cheap brands. After heating I rinse them with boiling water in a colander to get rid of the sauce, and just put a bit of HP brown sauce on them.

It isn't the same to just use haricot beans.

I've heard back from Branston about their baked beans.

On the label it lists "flavourings" but gives no details and they won't disclose what the flavourings are. Maybe there is gluten and maybe not, maybe they don't know themselves. The beans are also made in a factory that handles wheat and gluten products so too much of a risk for me  I'm sure many coeliacs and gluten sensitives will be fine with the product - it's a matter of personal choice and attitude to risk knowing one's own sensitivity.

possibly..

it was a six pack and the next can was the same.. so I took some photos to fire off..

I found if you microwave for about 10 mins it steams off the water ..

Broken Link Removed

one or two tins dont constitute a bad batch........it could run to hundreds of tins in the same batch.

we favour, for price, Aldi's own...
thick sauce, good quality haricots but so slightly sweet.

Heinz for taste but far too expensive for a simple bean.

We switched to Branston beans a long time ago as Heinz are cr@p, however I did try Branston's version of tomato ketchup but didn't like it so still buy Heinz's version (when it's on offer though!).

I stocked up with Branston beans when they were £1 for a pack of 4. :thumb:

Only middle class snobs and rich baby boomers eat Heinz beans!

We make do with own brand beans whilst we put all we can into our pensions so we might retire at 80!:roflmto:

Sounds like a bad batch to me Jim

They were on offer somewhere at six tins for £2.50, so I got a dozen to bring away - they even make Italian sliced bread bearable.

We also got some Branston beans - four cans for a pound in ASDA - they are pretty "last resort"....
