Lights failed yesterday. Had to travel from Oxford to Wales last night on main beam, never got flashed once, which is testament to how crap my lights are. Candles in jam jars should be better. What upgrade options, if any, do I have with my 99 Hymer ?

i'm fairly certain you can upgrade bulbs. i assume your headlamp reflector surfaces are in good order. :thumb:

The fact that you were not flashed suggests that the headlights may not be correctly aligned Jim. My 2003 Hymer has the same front as yours and if I don't dip, I certainly get flashed. When was the alignment last checked? Mine is done every year by the servicing engineers before they take it for MOT. I noticed an improvement in illumination the first time I went to them. Having said that, the standard Hella lights are not the brightest I have driven behind, but so long as the projector lens and reflector of the dipped unit are in good condition, they are not bad.

Osram Night Eaters

Assuming you do not have sealed beam units in the Hymer, I think you could do a lot worse than fit these bulbs! They will generate about 30% more light.

They are also road legal some bulbs you can buy are not. As far as I am aware 160 watt bulbs are not road legal I believe that 60 watt main beam is the limit, not only that 160 watt would generate too much heat IMHO, at the moment Euro Car Parts have a special offer on the Osrams.

I put some in my MGF and they made a terrific difference Osram have a web site you could have a look and see the difference they make on there.

The original Dolomite Sprint had 85 Watt main beam.......not sure if that has changed.

I note that the suggested bulbs in earlier posts refer to H4 versions (not that it affects the output spec. of course). The Hymer twin headlight system uses H1 for both low and high beam units, despite the manual listing H7. This is a misprint caused, I suspect, in translation due to the continental habit of handwriting a figure 1 with a long upstroke.

Canbus Compatible?

Does changing the wattage of bulbs affect the canbus system in the Ducato chassis? I noticed free 1W LED sidelight bulb bundled with some of the replacement headlight bulbs on the autobulbsdirect website.
For example might the system interpret this drop in power consumption as a failed bulb?

I use Osram Nightbreakers in both MH and car. About £12 a pair on e-Bay - they definitely make night driving easier.

on some vehicles the canbus system dictates the output of the lamp and if it detects a lamp failure it will illuminate another lamp on the vehicle hence why you see some cars driving around with 1 fog light lit normally the side light will have failed on that side.
