Well, having been posted to Northern Germany in late September we are just starting to feel settled but it has been 'trying' to say the least. We were last posted to Germany in the mid-eighties and things have certainly changed, the famous German efficiency is not quite as it was, for example we have waited almost 3 months for a telephone and internet! (almost as bad as the UK). We have managed a couple of camping trips in the local area and have been very impressed by both the facilities and the welcome we have recieved, we have certianly received lots of waves as we travel around. It is a lovely time of year to be in Germany with the Christmas markets in full swing we travelled to the half-timbered city of Celle on Saturday and really enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells of a tradiitional Chrismas market, the gluwein was hot and the bratwurst very tasty. We are now getting ready for the trip home to Hayling Island in a couple of weeks time and can't wait to see the grand kids. We will then meet up with friends for our annual New Years camping trip, this year we are all meeting in the midlands, we normaly have a murder mystery night and will always have a bbq on New Years day, our first of the year! Many years ago we has a Chinese meal there, still remember it to this day. I wonder if it's still, should be and be full too.

We were visiting Hanover Messe and stayed in Celle.

We visited Hanover the week before (the other half needed a ball gown), it is a very interesting place, with a modern city centre and a beautiful 'Altstadt (old town). My wife sent her mum a message to tell her where we were going as my wife was born there (nearly 50 years ago) when her dad was in the Army!

We were previously posted in Osnabruck, Sennelager and Minden. Nothing has really changed except that the support to the families is not as good as it used to be (the same as for everyone else I suppose), the Local Oversees Allowance is pretty poor and as mentioned previously on here you have to pay to change your headlights and fit winter tyres, at least I only have to pay for tyres on the drive wheels of the MH, We have had the first real snowfall of the winter so will test out the tyres tomorrow.:thumb:

I worked with the Sue Ryder Foundation in Celle in the late 60's, which I think was probably one of the the first care homes for Polish War refugees in Europe, (not absolutely sure about this though). I remember helping with the later stages of building the home (on Bahnhofsstraße maybe, not sure of the address, long time ago?), but my abiding memory is one of removing lots of smelly kittens from residents rooms and starting smoking, (gave up smoking mid 70's, started again 90's, (i.e., 1990's not in my 90's), given up now for ever (I hope). :Eeek:

Happy days, well for me at least.

Spent a bit of time "Wandering around" Sennelager, Vogalshang, helped start a fire on Luneberg Heath, (took them months to put out).
Attended, by mistake, a Reunion of the 10th Panzer Regiment in Paderborn.
Was part of an Escort, for a convoy of ammunition to Berlin in August 1961, and ended up swapping Guiness for Vodka with the Volkspolizei and Volksarmee
Got roaring drunk in the Dusseldorf ALT STADT, got arrested in the Reiperbahn, Had a 1/6th share in a 52 Mercedes 120S among other things::bigsmile:

We spent 4 brilliant years 1977-81 with 45 Fd Regt RA in N Germany and lived in a village called Bergen Belsen. Yes that Belsen.
The block I worked in had been used as a hospital for the prisoners and the NAAFI was in the Roundhouse which was the Officers Mess for the Panzer regiments before and during WW2.
Hitler stayed there on his many visits and the ball room had been preserved not as a historical monument but for use by the British Army.
I went back in August and very little had changed.

Not moaning BUT

I forgot to mention that my son is serving with 26 Fd Regt RA in Gutersloh. His LOA covers his rent with a bit left over and he has fuel coupons which I believe cost 39p per litre so the benefits may not be as good as they were but Hey Not bad
You forgot to mention that you are put up in hotels when you move in or out off your quarter and have packers in to do you removals.
How I wish I'd had the same as we had to do it all ourselves in the GOOD OLD DAYS!!
I have friends who did 22 yrs in BAOR way back and came home to UK minted but what a culture shock for them.

PS you are a lot better paid than I was then too

Happy days! My last overseas posting with the RAF was for 3 years in West Berlin at Goering's WW2 Lutwaffe base that was 'built to last a thousand years.' As you say, a generous local overseas allowance, fuel coupons, and on top of that (in Berlin) we had FRIS ...(Fixed rations income supplement).. which was food sold off from the stockpile that had to be maintained to cater for the British Forces for 6 months in case our close Soviet neighbours decided to impose another blockade. The food was so cheap! I can remember getted hacked off with being fed steak virtually every day of the week. Spirits were so cheap too - we used to use gin in our cars' washer bottles - much cheaper than screenwash!! I can remember my father-in-law asking for a whisky at the base's football club. "8 pence" asked the barman. "8 pence !!??" says my father-in-law. The barman replied, "Sorry - I presumed you wanted a double!!":roflmto:

Hi "RANGITIRA" I see in your post that you had part shares in the 1952 merc above. Well I was in Bergen Belsen near Hohne and bought the same car for 1 D.Mark, which was about 2 shillings and 6 pence then.. It was painted metallic blue and had Paisley patterned red in the inside of the roof and doors. It had super big running boards and huge 3 spoked headlamps. I was just wondering if it was the same one ? there can't have been too many of those owned by Squadies, it must be worth a fortune now.. "happy days" PS I sold it for the same amount when I left , to a mate..

Many of you have mentioned places around the area we are currently serving, we are currently posted to Hohne Garrison which is in Bergan Belsen (the Death Camp museum is very poignant but very informative and just down he road) and Fallingbostel is only 15 mins drive away. We have had loads of snow over the pasr few days with more expected, starting to worry anout the trip home the weekend, I will just have to leave early on Sunday. With all you old soldiers out there maybe we will have to have a rally in Hohne. I am certainly an old soldier having joined as a boy soldier in 1978 I am still serving, I am not sure if I like it yet!!!

Belson, certainly poignant, possibly a little more than that when I visited. I am impressed that you have served for over 30 years. For many reasons I could never have joined the military. What made you join and stay for that long and why? You don't have to answer, but I took a different path and I too am not sure if I liked it! :whatthe:
