Quiet right to use gellcoat, Buff first to clean surrounding area, thus ensuring a better paint match. Remove any loose bits and fine sand. Then fill with gell of a suitable colour if poss. Plastic padding used to sell some years ago in white, don't know if its still available. As gellcoat needs to be covered from the air to go off hard it keeps rubbery for days,(unless adding a drop of the proper wax as used in when fiberglassing roofs). Brush it on and cover with sellotape from the bottom up. This seals it and follows the vehicles form, ideal for hull scratches on boats. It also allows you to squeese the air bubbles out as you go along and end up with a near flat surface and no runs. Next day remove tape and fine sand with a rubber block to keep the repair flat, buff up and spray if nessesary . Just done my plastic wheel arch and made a good job, hope it's of help.
