We had this earlier this year, we cured it by using soda crystals. We emptied the tank and then closed the outside tap. We put soda crystals in sinks and shower turned on the taps at hot and ran till cold. turned taps off and went for a drive. 30 mins later we let grey water out. Not had a smell since. I think we will do this once a year now.

I've tried all the old wives remedies when we have had smells, only thing we have found to work is the Thetford stuff.
As for cleaning and descaling tanks, loo & water heater, always use white wine vinegar, 30 cents/Lt in France always bring as least 10 bottles back , great for kettle & iron at home as well.

Like others have said we leave the tap open all the time with a bucket underneath and empty as required.
Surely it will overflow when having a shower, OK on a naturist site there you can nip out half way through and empty it, might get some strange looks on an Aire, probably acceptable on a Stellaplatz in Germany.:)

We use any supermarket own brand thin bleach @ about 40p for a 2 litre bottle.

Pour down sinks and shower plug hole. Add water to fill tank between one third and half full. Ten to twenty minute drive and drain.

Always works for us.

@lennyhb don't use the van shower as its a PVC and therefore far too small and uncomfortable. We use site showers.

Why not just use Elsan Grey Water Tank Flush? If you are driving around in a £40,000 motorhome why chuck cheap orange pop down the sink?

Crikey there are some stingy sods on this site! :)

KH
Dead right about stingy sods in motorhomes, though I'm not saying that applies to Funsters. When we spent the winter in Murcia at Los Madriles 2 years ago we were amazed at the number of very expensive vans parked up on any old piece of land or car park, just because it was free. We were more than happy to pay €10 a night for a good pitch, electric and excellent site amenities, not to mention added security. Gary

I didn't pay 40k for my motorhome but it does leave more money for beer. (y)

It isn't a matter of being stingy, simply the same value for money principle that we apply to the majority of our shopping.
We buy many products from Lidl & Aldi not just because they are cheaper than Asda or Morrisons but that their quality is at least as high.
As I've posted elsewhere, experience has shown that using bio washing liquid keeps the black waste cassette cleaner than either Thetford or Elsan products. The same is the case with Buster Plughole Sanitiser Granules for the grey waste system. The fact that they are also cheaper than the branded equivalents is simply a bonus.
