We always wipe the plates with kitchen paper before cleaning , so the left overs do not enter the waste tank
and accumulate and add to the possible cause of a smell.

On your journey home, make sure tank is empty then pour a 1/4 cupfull of bleach down each plug hole. Turn taps on for two minutes then drive home and empty drain tap near drain. Job done.

Thanks for the answers , i was leaving the tap open at the back , but i have now become paranoid that i will be one of the people that get slagged off by the grey water police:ROFLMAO: for accidently letting the odd trail of waste on the road where the tank has not fully emptied, but hey what the fcuk, i will do the coca cola thing and leave the drain open when empty, and risk the wrath of others that might see a tiny splash come out and assume i am one of the people who drives off draining the whole tank on the road ha ha

Nothing wrong in emptying your grey water by a road drain. This is where it goes when your on site anyway. Perhaps people think there is two separate underground system's for transporting rain water and grey water.

I believe there is but no doubt an expert will be on shortly.

After I empty the tank I put in approx a tablespoon of soda crystals, the same amount of the smart price washing powder ( other cheap brands are available :)) a jug of water and just leave it.

That is not correct usually. The grey waste goes down the foul sewer or into a septic tank, in exactly the same as the waste from you kitchen sink and bath should do. Rain water either goes to the rainwater sewer (if you are in area with one as we are) or a soakaway or some other holding system, from which it leaches through the ground or gets discharged to a watercourse.

Most road gulleys drain direct into a watercourse, sometime via a petrol interceptor or holding ponds.

I stand corrected. Still, when you see the amount of car washers that are shoving thousand of gallons of contaminated water into storm drains a few gallons from a grey waste tank is not going to make that much difference.

might come as a shoock but there are at least two seperate systems in many places three road drains tend to go straight into rivers without treatment
at homeif on mains drainage you can have combined or separate rain water drains

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
We just let the dogs lick all the plates before putting them in the sink.
That way you don't get any food waste down the pipes(y)

When in the van it is compulsory for any one who visits or eats in the van to lick the plate
The best bits are usually left on the plate why let the dog have it

clean your plates before you wash them up, wipe them off and then wash . the residue in the tank must be awful if it smells inside the van. keep the plug in, and drain the tank at shorter intervals, don't let it stew in there.

When we was newbies Mrs Funflair tried, actually she eventually sucseeded in convincing me we had a gas leak after three days I still couldnt find one but it fixed it when I emptied the waste tank.

Was that a coincidence or not.

Since 2011 therefore I'm not a newbie anymore
As an ex caravan near I am in the routine of putting a 15 litre black water container under my waste pipe.

I actually find getting rid of the waste water this way quicker and easier than fiddling about driving around the campsite to find the Motorhome dump point and then reverse back and forth to get it over the drain!

But ten my wife says I'm a nerd!

I have a pet theory on this...

If you look under your sink you may find that there is no trap as there is in a house. In our MH there is a convoluted pipe that takes the grey water to the tank. As this convoluted pipe is very flexible it is threaded around obstructions inside the van and the through the chassis outside as it meanders to the tank. Somewhere along its length the pipe will have a slight rise and any gunge will settle in these shallow rises and the water will still run past the gunge. But unlike a domestic waste trap, where their depth makes an effective seal with the water, these slight rises will dry out as the van moves and the gunge is exposed allowing a smell to come out of the plughole.
Most of the joints on the convoluted pipe are push fit and are easy to dismantle to allow removal to flush and clean if required. Have a think about it before you remove them as it is likely the gunge may escape into the cupboard etc!

The problem we have is the smell coming in from outside when we have the windows open but nothing from the plugholes:Eeek:
We use miles of kitchen roll cleaning off residue off before washing up.We have tried cheap coke which worked for a couple of days but the pong soon came back especially in warm weather. :Eeek:

Anyone had the same problem?
