Grandfather rights are removed when you reach 70 years. Also I was told that the competence test for MH's has not yet been introduced by the UK

Don't think that is strictly true.
At 70 your licence expires and you can either renew at the lower 3500kg limit and surrender your GF rights or you can renew to maintain your C1+E etc up to 7500kgs/ 8250gtw GF rights by undertaking a medical and eye test etc which if passed and renewed will be good for a further 3 years.

Thanks Larry I didn't know that Doubt I'd pass what I understand is a tougher medical

Just doing mine at present, what a saga, taken five months so far but almost there, fingers crossed :xeek::xgrin:

Btw the medical is not too bad if you are reasonably healthy

I cant see a competence test for MHs being introduced.
Testing on what basis?
Define a MH....it's just a van, nothing special in terms of vehicle size and weight.
Most of us are already licenced for that size of vehicle anyway.

Did you have the medical done by your Doc or another?

By my own GP, £85 , but mainly just referred to my medical records so straightforward.
The only potential hitch for me was the eye test, I had glaucoma in one eye and a Trabeculectomy op to prevent optic nerve damage.
As a result needed field vision test but have recently completed that without a problem, so now waiting for licence.

If we passed our test prior to 97 it was for up to 7500kgs and it is our right to keep it subject to health etc . I don't believe it could be retrospectively withdrawn.

That's my understanding also.
After 70 there are medical implications, but that's not to do with GF rights, it's solely an age thing.

If you want the exact details then PM Motor Roamin , Rick does all this for a living but this is the usual my mate down the pub was told by his mate in Australia that ...................

5 years ago existing professional drivers of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES driving for a living had grandfather rights to take 5 years to get their CPC ( certificate of professional competence) This applies to all professional and commercial drivers driving commercial vehicles over 3.5tonnes FOR A LIVING.

In September 2014 the 'grandfather rights' expired and by this time all PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES FOR A LIVING. should hold a card showing that and may be challenged by police or DVSA(VOSA) to show this. Failure to have will involve a punitive fine failure to carry will mean the vehicle will stay where it is until a driver with the right credentials arrives to take over.

This will not affect people driving motorhomes for pleasure in any way.

There are no other changes to drivers licences that will affect any 'grandfather rights' There are some changes I believe to entitlement groups on renewed licences - which is why you need to take a copy of your existing licence before you send it off for renewal or at 70 because DVLA have a bad habit of cocking the whole system up and forgetting some of your entitlement. Without proof you had it you will lose it.

To maintain the higher level of licence at 70 the GF rights bit, a medical is required and as such has everything to do with it.

The medical at 70 is required whether the entitlement is gained by GF or through taking a test, as is the case with younger drivers.
It's age related, a licensing requirement as such, not specifically a GFR issue.

Motorhomes are passenger vehicles category M

DfT statistics however include "Missing", "N1", "N2" and "Other" in the figures? N1 are up to 3500kg and N2 over 3500kg to 7500kg Goods vehicles.

Totally confusing explained by quote " The category type was only collected from 2001 onwards and hence older vehicles and imported vehicles have the category missing. The category listed is that which was recorded when the vehicle was type approved at the point of first registration. There are a small number of vehicles that have a category type that is not M1, N1 or N2 – these are quite possibly errors." Mike Dark, Vehicles Database Manager.

NB: Data for 2014 is for the first six months only

His explanation is flawed by the fact that in Q2 2014 there are vehicles still being registered as Missing and Other.

Because of medical problems and whilst my licence wasn't suspended it still took the dvla almost 2 years before my new photo licence was supplied
