Since April 1846 but have always camped.
looking at going to the lakes in May this year and going through Switzerland and the Gotthard tunnel. Has anyone done and what did they think to it as I've read that it jams up quite a bit. Is there a cost?
Thanks.

Hi,
No charge for this tunnel but I'm not sure about jams. We did it a couple of years ago and went straight through both times. Not sure if time of day is an issue re jams. After 10.5 miles I was glad to get out into the daylight.

yes all tunnels included in Vignette a bargain compared to french tunnels:cautious:

as we go during the summer timing everything, going down we tend to use it at night, heading home hit it as early as poosible

Went through last May/June and there were hold ups for an hour or two going south and an hour going north. There are road works and they are only using one tunnel, not sure how it is now.

If you do it as we and a few posters on here have suggested..ie late at night. There is a useful parking place at the Southern End at the bottom of a ski lift. Easily located on Google Earth. A Police patrol having a break waved to us when we arrived the first time and we've used it without problem since. We have been held up a couple of times but the longest delay was for 20 minutes.

Done it many times last time 3 months ago never been delayed. Cost is included in the vignette you buy at the border.

Long and dull driving through it but vastly cheaper than Mont Blanc as the toll is included in your vignette cost. A lot easier to drive than crossing the tunnel-free French-Italian border at Montgenevre.

Since 2011 therefore I'm not a newbie anymore
We did it a few years ago in June/July.

We were held up for 1.5 hrs going out of Switzerland and around an hour coning back.

They were only letting 10 cars going through at a time to leave a gap between the them.

Just enjoy the mountain scenery!
