not new in the sense of brand new

I'm trying to resurrect my old lappy...toshiba equium M50-216 running windows XP

its not been used for quite some time and the battery was almost dead so plugged into mains.

now it wont boot past the windows welcome page.
no recovery disc except the factory reset one which formats the whole drive.

just restarts to the 'windows did not start successfully' page.

tried starting 'windows normally'....'last known good config'....'safe mode with command prompt'.....'safe mode with networking' and plain old 'safe mode'

all three 'safe' modes it scrolls a load of machine code lines and does nowt after.

the other two, 'start normally' and 'last known good' revert to the same page as above and try to reboot (on timed countdown) to 'start normally' over and over again.

any ideas how to get it to boot ?

Have you got another laptop/pc that you can create a windows boot disk with. Then use this to start the broken one. Then try to fix it.

I had the same problem on an old laptop computer which had been unused for a while.
The battery, and I think the back up battery as well, were cream crackered.

Unfortunately I can't remember what I actually did. I just Googled, till I found a solution.

What I do remember was that the only thing that worked did result in a total formatting of the hard drive....

while trying to sort it I accidentally formatted it (thought I hit repair on the recovery disc) and lost the lot
