As some of you know I am a lover of quality older motorhomes and spend a considerable amount of my time searching the net both here in the UK and Europe and America looking for these rarities.
So, if it will be of any help to potential first time buyers who are like me on a limited budget I will put on this thread from time to time what I consider a good buy for what is a good van at the right money.
Some of the vans you will see on this post you will never have heard of, but don't be put off by that as one of my main priorities when purchasing a MH for myself is parts availability. Body panels on motorhomes are obsolete when the vehicle is only a few years old, so this will not be taken into consideration, but mechanical parts are of course the main thing to worry about when thinking of an older MH. So any vehicle that appears on this thread will have to have good parts availability.
This is one of my favourites and one to start you off. Its an Orion, built on the Mercedes chassis and of monocoque construction. Link Removed

:roflmto: a nice van but the engine looks a little small at 2000cc:ROFLMAO:

That will have the 2.5 litre turbo diesel from the Citroen CX in it. It will cruise at 80 MPH all day. The Citroen CX was the fastest production car built in its day. I know as I had one. The seller obviously knows nothing about what he is selling or its a typo.

All FFB 660s built in 1990 were built on a Fiat or Peugeot chassis. Neither made a 2000cc diesel engine. The Fiat chassis had a 2.5 turbo diesel engine. The Peugeot had the Citroen 2.5 turbo diesel engine which was left over from the Citroen CX that did not sell as well as expected.

Would you say the van below was similar ?

The one I had was a 660 Classic. They had the rear full width bathroom instead of the corner fixed bed. That was the only difference. The chassis was all the same on the 660.

What a long read/thread:Smile:

The weekend before last I caught up with my sister and husband for their first night in their new 16 year old Swift Royale. We met in Crail which is magical and recorded an episode of my podcast partly about Crail but mainly about their experiences of buying their first van using EBay, Autotrader Gumtree etc.

I post just on the basis it might be helpful if your in that position.

This looks well sorted and not a lot of money. A good starter van that should last a while and not loose any money on resale.Link Removed Loads of photos on the link at the bottom of the page.

At just over 4 grand this is for nothing. Worth between 8 and 9 every day of the week in the UK. Link Removed

A lot of van here for the money. All the bells and whistles, and one you should be able to leave to the grandkids. Link Removed

I just love the shape of this one. It is unique and very rare, but will possibly last another lifetime even though its an antique now. Mechanical parts are available on any street corner for this, and although at first it seems expensive for the year, looked after it will always hold its money. The layout is a little strange as it has a single bed in the rear, but everything is a compromise as we all know. Link Removed

Well they are coming out of the woodwork today. Whoever built this did a fantastic job and although a little strange looking at first, it does grow on you after a while. Link Removed
