Very many western companies have their products made in China and as you know they cannot spell for toffee :roflmto::roflmto:

A look at the sellers other items clearly demonstrates nothing is manufactured in Germany. Sterling have their stuff made in China too

Ok
Firstly it should look good
It should have all the solar cells perfectly arranged within the glass EVA sandwich and be square to the aluminium frame.
It should not be covered in sealant marks from sweat shop hands
A good sign of skimping is 2.5mm printed on the connecting cable

When you've seen enough examples of different panels it becomes obvious which are quality and ones that are grade b or worse.

This is not necessarily governed by the label on the back

Andy,
Many motorhomers on here wouldn't know a good panel from a bad one. If you could post some photos of good compared to bad it may help a member avoid being ripped off.:thumb:

Looking at my panels again has prompted me to search my purchases back to February 2013 and contact the seller. He has replied with some interesting and factual information about why he imported no more and the story of the dumping levy then and now.
I'm just waiting for his permission to quote his reply

This answers questions posed in other threads too

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your interest. The reason I imported no more panels was because last year the European Commission (Brussels) imposed an extra tax (Anti Dumping Duty) on imported panels from China which started off at 11.5% in March then would rise to 47% in Aug, then end up around 78% by Dec. It took them from March to Dec last year to decide on the final levels of tax, which they threatened all along to apply retroactively. This meant, in December 2013 when they decided how much tax to charge it would apply to panels imported from March 2013!...

So I sold off the stock I imported before March and would not import any more because I had no idea what tax I would be liable for and therefore had no idea how much to sell the panels for to cover my costs!.. In the end the EC decided on different levels of tax for different manufacturers from 11.5%-78% and because of complaints from other EU countries they decided not to apply the tax retroactively.

I have a couple hundred pairs of lovely aluminium and stainless steel mounting brackets sat in a warehouse gathering dust which I had manufactured in the uk especially for my panels (540mm wide). So, I do intend to import more panels in the future, I'm just not sure when!..

Kind regards,
Shaun

I notice from your photo that the wires are just lying on the roof rather than in conduits, which I have seen others use. How have you secured them and don't they flap about a lot when you are driving?

I use trunking where it is needed otherwise they are heavy cable tied to the holes in the frames underside edge. No they don't flap

Took me a while to find this.
Here is the centre of the three panels ready to connect to panels either side and enter through the roof to regulator.
The coil bottom right is what you see in the trunking going to the entry glands

I've been considering buying a new panel and leisure battery. I'm glad that I read this thread. I think I'll pay just that little bit extra and get someone local to source and fit a panel for me. Useful info. Thanks.

Cheers,
Lee.

I have concluded that I want two 100W panels of that size - my Adria has roof lights in awkward places and the panels need to be narrow. Have you tried panels from Biard or Triple Solar (both on ebay) and if so what were they like please?

friendly green giant is a favourite . particularly if you can buy a few . discount can be arranged . my mate bought several before we went off last winter . great panels worked fine .
you might have toi join forces with someone for a special price . about 80 quid for a 100 watt panel .

Thanks. I googled their website. Seem a good price at £90 for 100W but they are all sold out and they don't give dimensions, which are vital for me.

Update - I emailed him and he replied immediately. He has them in stock on ebay but they are too wide for me - probably because they are poly rather then monochrystalline.

Mono 100 are usually 1200x540 which is why I got a refund over the ecoworthy panel as they quoted shorter/wider

Unfortunately his 80w ones are the same width as his 100W - 670mm. Others do 100W and 80W that are 540mm wide, which is what I need.

Thanks again. Are the ali brackets you use better than the plastic ones that most sell?

No better or worse but I make my own. However I moved on and now mount them toe in and use a pan head screw upwards through the base to ensure the minimum adhesive thickness
