We have been doing the Med Coast of Spain for a few weeks now and are currently at Altea just north of Benidorm.

One of our objectives this trip is to buy a couple of gallons of good quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil to take home but haven't found any yet.

We are thinking of heading away from the coast for a while and wondered if anyone had any ideas about rural markets etc.

I seem to remember that the area around Albacete grows a lot of olives but am not sure. Anyone any experience with Olive Oil? (other than Popeye that is!!)

You really need to be able to taste it as what is excellent to one person is horrendous to another. Each Almazara has a different taste & most spaniards will only take their olives for processing to the one they like best as they normally receive all the oil back.

Go across country to Jalon in the Jalon, there is a 'cooperative' there which produces and sells very good olive oil. The route across is fine and has some spectacular views..

It also has a large market on a Saturday morning...
