We were in Gibraltar about a month ago and drew £200 out of the hole in the wall. We were completely relaxed and expected to get UK notes. We actually got special Gibraltar currency. Their notes are very pretty and we thought no more about it.

Coming back to UK we expected to pass them off easily enough just like Scottish notes. This is not the case. After a few knock backs we went into Lloyds TSB just to swap them for British Notes. Lloyds wanted nothing to do with them.

We were convinced that this was a one-off and just a dumb cashier. So, off we went to Barclays. They also wanted nothing to do with them and would not let us pay them into our bank account.

A week passed and we went back to our usual Saturday lunch pub. They had taken a £20 off us the previous week and we thought we might get rid of another one. No such luck, they had not been able to get rid of the one we gave them.

We thought we would give NatWest a try. Forget it, they won't accept them either.

So, despite the fact that it says £20 sterling on the notes they are completely unacceptable.

The moral of the story, if you visit Gibraltar don't draw any more money out of the cash machine than you need that day.

Just as a footnote, a big thank you at ASDA at Middlebrook, Bolton, they took our last one. Goodness only knows if they will get rid of it.

Know what you mean. Been trying to get rid of a Gib £20 note since April. No Forex outlet will take them as they don't sell Gib notes. They don't sell Gib notes cos normal uk notes are legal tender in Gib so nobody needs to buy Gib notes before they go.
As you say either take REAL UK notes with you or only draw what you can spend in a day. Worst case change notes to coins before you leave Gib. Coins will work in any coin operated equipment in UK eg parking machines.

It's the same on the IOM, try cashing a Manx note. They think you have come from planet Zog!

The bureaux de change on planet Zog offer very good rates on Gib and IOM currency.
