Still need the correct regulator with a crash sensor.

didn't know that..

I am not aware of any regulation that says that Gas bottle(s) must be turned off while moving if you don't have the secumotion regulator..

can you point to the regulation ?

I'd be interested know as well. I never turn ours off when travelling and I know we don't have the secumotion kit.

Can't find the link at the moment, but I am certain it is illegal to use an appliance while moving unless you have a secumotion or similar type of regulator, this applies to Germany and France. As for the UK you are free to blow yourself up.:)

How will I blow myself up ?

Our RV LPG tank had no safety cut off device, and the fridge ran only on LPG or 240v .. as do most RV fridges, so no option but use gas while on the move.. also, when travelling in winter we ran the hot air heating and water heater.

The cab heater in a large motorhome is inadequate to keep a van warm in winter.. If the need arose I wouldn't hesitate to run the Truma warm air while travelling..

My choice.. I'm more than happy with the safety shut off valve fitted in the R67 Gaslow bottles..

over 50 years
the gpl pump is supposed to switch off at 90% ......
so you shouldnt ever be over filling .
thought you spent most of the year in portugal you wouldnt be giving calor any half full bottles .
might be repsol or forgot the other one beige bottles getting old .
but when as a garage stopped any one filling a foriegn bottle in portugal?

Ok, Mr vwalan.

In response to your post(s) which replied to mine...

Here goes!

If you are one of the vast majority of motorhomers on Fun with a normal, single gas bottle, when you think you need more gas, you have a choice...

You can either wait until you have used it all up (run out) or you can exchange it for a full one before running out and thus give the gas company, (most often Calor if you are in the UK, which the vast majority of Funsters are) the left over gas.

If you buy one of refillable type bottles named in the thread title, then you don't have to wait until you run out before you top up with gas.

This was the point I was trying to make in my post.

Now, I am fully aware that there are Rufty Tufty motorhomers, who wait until their normal gas bottles are empty, who then refill them themselves (2 litres = 1 kilo) using an adapter bought somewhere like Ebay. I used to do this often.

There now appears to be Rufty Tufty motorhomers SO Rufty Tufty that they rely on the cut off valve in the station's gas pump to cut off the gas supply when filling half full, normal gas bottles OR can tell when a bottle is nearly full by listening to the sound the pump is making. (Mr vwalan for example.)

BUT.

Most (MOST) Funsters would not do this.

I have sorted out my own gas supply solutions years and years ago, but was pointing out to others, who were considering whether to invest in a refillable bottle system or not, the great advantage of being able to top up a bottle before running out without resorting to rufty tufty methods.

Whether Portuguese garages allow you to fill normal bottles yourself with your own adapter is irrelevant.

I don't think many Funsters considering buying a refillable system would say to themselves, "I won't bother because in Portugal they won't stop me filling a normal bottle myself..."

Please note.

By "normal" bottle, I mean a bottle you exchange for a full one when empty.

By "refillable" bottle, I mean one that has its own cut off valve inside so it can't be "over filled".

The shut off valve in the bottles will only cut of the gas supply in the event of a rupture, it will not shut of the supply in the event of an accident when the pipe does not rupture and there is gas still flowing, a danger to yourself and others including the rescue services who may be trying to save your life.

Hence the reason why you should have the Truma Safe Motion (secumotion) regulator and hose/s, if intending to travel with the gas on.

You won't regret it. Mine fitted last month and works great. An 11kg and a 6kg(not enough room in locker for 2 11's unfortunately.) They do a great job at the right price.x:-)

Just been into our local caravan / motorhome / camping type shop. They didn't have what we needed (I've ordered online instead) but we did ask about a refillable gas system..... around £400 fitted he said. 'OW MUCH!!!!!!! I thought.

He said all cyclinder now have to be R67 rated (which I knew) and all fillers on the exterior of the vehicle plus it would be necessary to have a certificate of conformity for both the system and fitting.

Hummmmmmm not sure about the filler on the exterior and a certificate for the fitting - anyone know anything about that?

At £400 I would continue to get calor as not worth having the refillable fitted. The place I get my gas lifts the new cylinders out and in for me and does the connections. If you have to have a certiicate for the fitting it means you would have to have them refitted by a "specialist" when swapping vans as well.
The only certificate required is not one that says who installed it - it simply certifies that the conversion conforms to relevant standards. It can be obtained by having the system inspected by a qualified installer. Or possibly by the guy who certifies gas safety for a hab service.

As for RV's running the fridge on gas while driving, it is against UK and European Road Traffic acts to use an appliance with a naked flame when driving.
