Filled up at a L.Eclerc in France yesterday.

One bottle empty, about 21 litres, and the second bottle had had a few days use.

Filled okay for about 15 litres and then would only fill very, very slowly for a couple of litres and then stopped.

Any one had a similar problem - and what could have caused it?

Any help appreciated.

Aren't these bottles considered ''full'' at 80% of their capacity?

If so, a 20 litre bottle would be considered full with 16 litres in it.

The bottle normally takes around 21 litres of gas when it's empty - add on the second bottle that had used at least a few litres and both cylinders should have taken about 25 litres - but they didn't.

Gaslow's website states the bottles have an 80% shut off valve.

I wouldn't worry about it -close one bottle and run the other till empty and then fill up again, asap. and do a recheck-at least you have a working system with gas available(y)

Can only think the first bottle wasn't fully empty when it changed over, is it an auto valve?

Even if manual like mine my only clue is my fridge trying to light, I then change bottles manually, never really noticed exactly how much gas goes in :)(y)

At least you know you have at least 21 litres :)

The 80% limit is just over 21 litres, 100% = approx 26 litres.

The first bottle was definitely empty with manual changeover, it ran out when cooking a meal (Sod's law), but as you say it may have been a system problem at E,Leclerc.

Hopefully okay next time at a different place.

Thanks for the replies.

I have had exactly the same experience before. It didn't recur so probably a fault with the pump.

I had similar at the place we fill locally, was struggling to get much gas in, assistant came came out took the nozzle off & reattached it & it was fine, made me look like a complete Amateur, she laughed & said it happen's some times, thing is we nearly always fill there! with out a problem.

From Gaslow site
  • "Large Gaslow 11kg Direct fill cylinder holds approxinately 21 litres of LPG, taking an average of just 1 minute 11 seconds to fill to 80% cut off."

Which is what I stated in my post #2 when I gave the example of a 20 litre capacity bottle being considered full with 16 litres in it
No, a 20 litre stated capacity would be at the net 80% fill, so would in fact be 25 litres gross, this is not stated normally as it would be irrelevant and even worse misleading (... and confusing!).

Trust me, and others, the stated capacity is the 'usable' capacity, ie 80%.

I don't have Gaslow, BUT my car does run on Autogas! The station I fill up at regularly seems to vary on input pressure. Sometimes the fill is really quick, I have a 48 litre tank, usually I get to about 35 litres when filling from empty, and it is filling so slowly that I give up, whereas there are stations where I get to 40 litres really quickly, and the stop valve pops in!
All depends on where you fill up I think.

Yup.. we have had a duff pump do the same thing.. Maybe it happens when the tank feeding the pump is low. I have absolutely no idea though

I had this exact same problem a few years back but mine occurred after I'd had a nasty incident with a leaking filler hose. See this thread:

I also had the same issue in Spain in December.
I expected the tanks to take 23/24 litres but only took 16.
Next fill was 23 litres as I expected.
I suspect that the tank wasn't empty even though the auto changeover had swopped tanks.
I later discovered, or our dealer did, that the Truma regulator had a partial oil blockage.

Richard.
