Is it necessary to change gear oil and can the level be checked ?

In the past I'm sure I can remember boxes having no drain facility... but the last 3 vehicles I've had all have had drain plugs...
Rear diffs seldom do but all have a level plug and top up facility..
I can only ever remember changing gear box oil once and that was on a transit I owned for 16 years.. so it's seldom necessary if at all...
