Fuel tank level problem (1 Viewer)

Merc 416 chassis with long range tank. The problem I have is that running the fuel level seems to get dragged lower than it actually is I think its almost empty and top up only to find it only takes 10 litres or so. Vehicle is level when I take the readings. how can it go lower than it actually is and then come back up
Any ideas anyone? I'm mystified.

Partially filled the float could, errr, float around:Blush:

Had it once years ago, also had a dicky level sensor that would sort of disconnect and reconnect intermitantly which caused similar.

May be baffles In the tank, stopping the free movement of the fuel.

quite possible, it may only be sitting low in the fuel .. so slows low level .. but when you fill up it rises enough to show full. ?

On an older vehicle,if the sender is the type with the windings on it and the windings have worn,which they do in a vehicle that dosnt do big milages like a MH. Thats your problem...its becouse the float has been constantley at the same position for a long time and worn the windings down in one spot.

Hi Roger just set the trip mileage and work out when you need to refuel say every 300 miles not like you to spend money and effort for a fuel gauge .

some of the sender units in modern motors have a float lock that engages when you turn off the key to hold the float if this is not letting the float float as it were then it will read low until it warms up.
i see this a lot in the scrap yard when we disconnect the battery then drain the fuel the gauge will stay where it was when the battery was disconnected.
