Despite a fan and other items to help the fridge work I finally fixed it.

Ice crystals in the fridge. You know you're jealous.

Well 3-way fridges are not built in the same way as modern compressor fridges. The aluminium fins in the back of the fridge simply touch the refrigerant pipes (which absorb the heat) and these are built into the insulation. Like a rolling pin on a work surface the point of contact is quite small and this is made worse by too much foam insulation either partially covering the pipes or pushing the heat sink away from the pipes.

By liberally applying this compound the point of contact is larger so heat is more easily absorbed from the inside of the fridge.

Penny of tar..,
The compound isn't cheap so why would the manufacturer use more than absolutely necessary? So they just use a bit.

By taking the heat sink off (torx screw) you can put on a lot of compound and improve the performance.
