have been reading the book on French Aires that I have just bought and in the instructions on how to use these aires they say that you are not allowed to put out your awning or any chairs/tables etc... Is this so?

On some Aires in high season there will be no room for a chair::bigsmile: Out of season or on quiet aires getting a chair and a table out is fine. Don't forget they are designed primarily to be stopovers rather than holiday destinations::bigsmile:

As Jim said, they are not camp sites, some have a 24 or 48 hr maximum stay , but it's rarely enforced .. we stayed on one at Capbreton for several weeks with this rule .. even got friendly with the lady collecting the fees .. :winky:

the no chairs / awning rule is in place to prevent people from commandeering too much space, but when space allows no one bothers ..
you will often see French vans parked in opposite directions with an awning extended, BBQ out and a party in full swing .. but if it gets busy the pull it in..

enjoy.. they are the best way to see France.. :thumb:

On some "Aires" we've found we can hardly open the door - let alone put up an awning.
