DIESEL PRICES TO RISE
THE favourable taxation of French diesel is to be brought to an end over the next five years, the government has announced. Starting from next year tax on diesel will rise one centime per litre in both 2016 and 2017, while the tax on petrol will be reduced by the same amount. From 2017 onwards even bigger changes could be introduced if the government is to end the difference in taxation between the two fuels which is currently 20 centimes per litre.

LONELY PLANET RECOMMENDS THE AUVERGNE
The volcanic landscapes of the Auvergne have been named one of the 10 ‘must visit’ regions of the world in a list put together by celebrated travel guides Lonely Planet, which calls it an “unknown jewel”. Reputed for its dramatic 40km chain of volcanoes, the region is already notable for its Unesco world heritage sites in Clermont-Ferrand and Puy-en-Velay plus the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrimage routes but Lonely Planet highlights it as “overlooked by visitors”. Now the guide is selling the region and its four departments of Puy-de-Dôme, Haute-Loire, Cantal and Allier across the world to “travellers weary of tourist-clogged rivieras”.

NEW HIGH-SPEED FERRY?

A NEW high-speed passenger ferry service to France could be up and running from Weymouth Harbour next year in a move that will create 90 jobs. HighSpeedFerries plans to run two or three regular sailings a day in season from Weymouth to Cherbourg. The journey would take less than two hours port-to-port. It would be the shortest crossing ever on the Western Channel – the terminal-to-terminal time will be comparable with Dover-Calais and there would be a huge road distance and time saving for travellers between the West of England and Western France, compared with routing via Calais.
