I see robs off for a trip to nantes in september and have noted the replies. we have got two small monsters with us aged 2 and 4 so we will be taking a fair amount of stuff with us. Are the aires suitable for young kids or should we stick to the camp sites or both ? Oh both boys love seafood. The 2 year old eats the shells too....Mal..

My opinion would be that aires are not very suitable for kids.

    Others may have different opinions.

    Both ..

some aires are great, more like sites... we have used them extensively with kids.. others are just car parks not really suitable for young kids simply because they would have no freedom to run around and play.. . but fine for an overnight stop.

have look at the new Fun aires map .. there are a lot on your route .. and many that would be suitable .http://www.frenchaires.com/ .. if any take your fancy you can contact the submitter for more info ..

Hi , My experience is that some aires are next to parkland or recreation areas but most are basic parking areas some with nothing for kids, some with not enough room to put chairs out, foriegners tend to ignore 6 mtr rule and park car park close (cosy not!!!). My suggestion is go for campsites but while over there look in at some of the aires for future ref, then only you can decide. Terry

I reckon ScotJimland has it totally right...

Not all aires are the same...

On the ones with less facilities for kids couldn't you send them around the other vans and see what they could lay their hands on? :Rofl1: :Rofl1: :Rofl1:

We use aires with our daughter Sophie who is 14 now and like scotjim says not all are the same, we have parked on a few with parks and municipal swmiing pools, also some next to lakes and rivers which can be ideal for the kids. We have also used ones that are just carpark like, but these are fine if you are just stopping over on way or if like in La Rochelle last wek you want to visit the town or city for a day or 2 and wont really be spending loads of time in the mh.

    I forgot to mention..

The French word 'aire' simply means 'area' . so...

Don't confuse Camping Car Aires which normally have this sign [IMG]

With Autoroute Aires which have this sign or similar [IMG] they are open to all and IMO not safe to use overnight !
