I recently re-joined the Camping & Caravanning Club so that we can go on rallies.

We were amazed that on a recent rally they insisted that we put a fire bucket out at the front of our 'van saying that it was a C & CC rule.

Not having a red bucket on board, I put the fire extinguisher out.

Is this really a current C & CC rule????

Would a few buckets of water really make a difference if a motorhome caught fire???

started when I was 11 with my parents-forgot to stop!been real one since 1980!
Not really just put an armband and hi-vis jacket on someone and give them something to do.
They have said it will deal with a tent fire, not much left of the tent!

Fire bucket

It might be a rule but it's a pathetic one. A bucket of water would make no difference at all. Indeed, if the motorhome was well alight I imagine it would be highly dangerous to approach near enough to throw the bucketful of water at it! The only thing that it might be effective for would be an out of control bar-b-que.

If some jumped up jobsworth (even in a voluntary position) approached me with this request I would happily tell them, yes, I will comply, if you supply the bucket.

It has always been a rule on rallies with both clubs but more so with the c&cc as they have a lot of tents on rallies, and it does work have seen it in action when a trailer tent caught fire, destroyed part of the canopy in the living area but the rest of the unit and roof over sleeping area was saved.
as long as its not a bucket at a time but a multiple throwing of water from several buckets

Have seen more than one of those nasty little throwaway barbecues set fire to surrounding vegitation. Fire travels far quicker than most people imagine, and a bucket or two of water makes all the difference between losing your van to somebody elses stupidity or saving it.

As for a caravan or motorhome burning, once properly alight, you wont put it out without serious firefighting equipment. The involvement of LPG also makes it too dangerous to approach. Fire fighters would generally corden off the area and set up a line to spray a cooling mist of water on the gas locker area for several hours to cool cylinders. When youve seen a gas cylinder destroyed by fire once, it will stay with you forever. They dont so much explode as become jet propelled fireballs:Eeek:

Don't poo poo a bucket of water.. most fires start off small.. perhaps just a piece of smouldering cushion or awning carpet... or even a BBQ falling over..

while a bucket maybe not the best fire fighting tool it is a lot better than nothing .. and as said, if everyone has a bucket to hand that's a fair amount of water.. maybe just enough to stop it getting out of hand until the fire service arrive..

of course, no good if a motorhome bursts into flames.. better to run as far as possible and dial 999

water is a good fire fighting medium for wood, paper, fabric etc .. but don't throw on a hydrocarbon fuel or chip pan fire... as the water hits the fuel, it turns to steam, the droplets explode and spread the fire further.. liquid fuel fires require either dry powder, foam or CO2 ....

LPG fires should not be extinguished.. this is dangerous as the gas will continue to escape and is likely to explode as it hits hot materials ..

The way to tackle a fire fuelled by LPG is to close the tank or bottle valve... this may not be possible due to the fire/heat .. so again get away as far as possible and dial 999

Some years ago it was quite common on CC sites to see fire buckets by every caravan.. and it's still advisable.. maybe a good idea for Fun Meets..

It seems the C&CC are a touch jobsworth. We were on their site on Skye last year and watched some campers set up their tents under a degree of supervision by the warder and when finally up they were asked by the warder to move one 2ft over as they were inside the 6m rule.
He waited until they had finished before asking them to move. I think he had a moustache :Eeek:

Most rallies won't have hook-up. I've never seen the bucket rule applied at club sites where you could be on hook-up and I don't believe it is a CC rule on rallies either just on C&CC rallies.

Hi, i'm almost sure that it is a recomendation, but not actually a rule.
And as someone explained to me, 20 buckets of water no good for a van fire, but could save a persons life,

Don't recall giving advice about electrical fires.. my omission.

but you make a good point.. before trying to fight an electrical fire, best unplug the EHU first .. basic common sense.. but not so common I guess ..

12v fires.. ie batteries or cables, water would be of little good.. there was a thread about that recently and it was put under control by ripping the wires off .. :Eeek: but it saved the van .. so if you have 12v cables smoking or even on fire.. if possible disconnect the battery .. if not.. get the hell out of it

Fires under bonnets can only be fought with a dry powder or CO2 extinguisher aimed through the grill .. NEVER open the bonnet..

As with all fires.. always call 999 as the first step ..

When we joined the C&CC a year ago I was a bit surprised to see that rule but wasn't upset by it at all. However, about 6 months ago I was either reading something or talking to somebody at Fun rally and the validity behind the reasoning was explained - although I'm afraid I can't recall the detail now.

On the C&CC meets we've been on we've used a blue collapsible bucket we already had rather than anything specialised and it has been fully acceptable (and not the only one which isn't red with "Fire" printed on it).

As far as I can see it's an easy and cheap rule to comply with without hassle and might just prove its worth should a fire be discovered when small enough to deal with.

Personally I think its good advice.
Im somewhat surprised that peole think its about a motorhome fire. As said, BBQ's catch things on fire all the time.
Don't think it does any harm to have one does it?

I carry a fire extinguisher just in case so why not a bucket?

As for it being a rule? well probably yes, after all this is the CC we are talking about.:ROFLMAO:

I've only ever seen one fire bucket...next to a Romahome at a club site. But I do remember seeing a reminder about having one at rallies in the C&CC magazine recently.

I should get one...got no excuse....I've got a utility tent

In fact...will everybody going to the Chester meet please make sure they've got a bucket...there was an organised Chinese lantern-thing launch last year on the Saturday evening, and it would be good to know that there would be a bucket chain ready if one landed on my tent :thumb:

A buckets a really useful thing to carry for all sorts of uses, so you don't need to carry one just for fire purposes.

Even an official one, though a bit pricey I thought.

Hi, as most know we marshal rallies and meets for motorhome fun, we also camp with other clubs and don't have a problem if the rally marshal says put your fire bucket out, some insist more than others. ::bigsmile:
One of the clubs we have camped with like the fire bucket, and last year it was worth putting one out.

See here: http://www.eeda.co.uk/index.php?opt...ers-to-the-rescue&catid=66:issue-88&Itemid=88

So as we have a dog we try and remember to fill it, so she can have a drink outside, and you never know it might come in handy.

So although its not a rule at fun meets, its worth thinking about. :whatthe: And let's hope we never need it.

I've always put a bucket of water outside, our caravan and following this, our Motorhome and always will. It's an orange B&Q bucket with FIRE written on it with a felt tip pen. It doubles up for car washing and storing bits and pieces in when travelling.
I think it cost around a pound and it could save a life.
Removing heat following a burn, with an immediate dowsing of water from a bucket could save someone from pain and possible permanent damage.
Water is changed on a regular basis due to passing dogs often taking advantage of it for a drink.
I would welcome this at all rallies. Better to be safe than sorry!
Brian.

Bob & Jane's post reminds me of an incident a few years ago at an English Civil War Society event. A tent camper used some sort of inflammable liquid for cooking and accidentally started a fire. That, too, was extinguished by a number of people with buckets of water with nobody injured and little property damage but could have been very serious had the buckets not been there.

Is that what Jim is going to sell? some sort of fire bucket.. mind you it would have to be full of something to make it worth £35.

I would not use water on a petrol fire... The big problem is I do put water outside the RV, but Ezzie keeps sticking her head in it.. soon gone... so we visit other motorhomes that have one...:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Motorhomes/tents/caravans all have combustionable material, along with petrol/diesel/LPG, other accelarents, plus 12v and 240v electricity, plastics/foams and some carciogenics. Professionally, anyone coming into contact with risk from ANY of the above, are told to dial 999, evacuate the area, keep everyone else away, and give the emergency serices info on their arraival........ie, how many gas bottles, is there petrol for the genny in the garage etc etc. Fire brgade advice in the home, evn with a small fire, is "get out, stay out",..............if i was asked to provide a bicket of water, no problem, but I,d be sitting half a mile away phoning my insurers while soem pratt played hero with it.

I thought there was a move to stop that Bucket carry on, the Greens were up in arms about it;

A, Fifty vans on site = fifty buckets of water, when rally etc over water is poured away ie wasted, 1 bucket 10 ltrs x 50 = 500 ltrs wasted

B,Most if not all Sites have enough Fire Fighting Equipment dotted around to sort out ANY fire, BY EU LAW .

Unfortunately when travelling around various sites it is evident that the equipment is there in many cases but can be a huge distance from the furthest van on site. Rallies on the other hand have little or no equipment available. So in both cases the responsibility falls on the individual camper to take precautions

As for water being wasted, I always use the bucket of clean water to rinse off any equipment that got muddy then pour it on the flowers or other greenery on site. Nothing wasted, as the water is being recycled by the plants not poured down a drain. Alternatively use it to rinse the cassette for the toilet:thumb:
