5 years, feel free to ask me about the Carado!!
I saw it too and I thought it looked very flimsy compared to a RWD Transit 350 chassis!

Then again think of the extra payload that skinny lightweight chassis gives you!
Well you have the better of me there, I have not seen the Ford one!!! I guess the currently trendy alko chassis looks like a matchbox toy variant to you then ???(y);)

Off road specific designs use wider, larger circumference wheels. The contact patch that results is similar to a smaller diameter wheel mounted in dual configuration. In fact, off road vehicles often have a second axle when the load would not have dictated it for an on-road vehicle to reduce ground pressure.
Payloads are very low for the size of the vehicles in question.
A Foden 6x8 DROPS IMMLC was huge but payload was less than 16 tonnes!
Its the larger diameter which increases step climbing ability and off road traction.
A small single wheels will have a greater ground pressure and in soft ground, this will create a deeper rut. A small wheel has great difficulty in climbing out of a deep rut and you get stuck!
The answer is either a larger diameter wheel or less ground pressure in these circumstances.

Let's wait for the heavens to open at Peterborough and see who has to tip the tractor drivers!

I had a six wheel tipper years ago with a non drive trailing axle,,,,utter useless off road...BUSBY.

'Clogged arteries' ! Sorry ...I slipped back into the past then! Mothers chip pan always had what looked like 'dripping' which cooled with a 'topping'!
Must admit though...Chips were divine!(y)

I was going after a new MH but looking carefully I have decided to stick with the old Transit base with the twin wheels and bigger payload,
All I need to do is change the things I do not like, lumpy bed and rotten grill for a moved oven. The fabric is awful but I will not pay thousands for a specialist seat maker to redo the covers.

A RWD 4-across Tranny is undoubtedly the best for grip but those inside wheels are a nuisance when you're on ordinary surfaces. Checking tyre pressures can be difficult and tyre valve extenders can cause valve failure. If you get a rock stuck between the tyres you could get a tyre failure. As for Fiat/Peugeot I believe they are built alongside each other but the Peugeot has no auto option. Mercedes have a sterling reputation if you can stump up the extra readies. As for Fiat servicing the local Fiat dealer may not be able to fit your MH in his service bay, but the nearest truck servicer will.

I can only coment on theFait/alco combiation, but after 6 years ownership of my (just coming up to 10 years old) m/h, yesterday it had its mot, flew through with no adviseriers (ever), no problems ever, just regular servicing. Never been stuck that i needed a tow, but have had to resort to mats under the wheeels a couple of times

We have a 2005 Fiat 2.8, as above passed mot last Sat with no issues, drives great in both town and motorway situations, pulls really nice, will sit at 70 very happily with more to give. One issue I do have is the waste gate actuator sticks when it's been sat, last year this freed itself off after a little while. But after sitting since Oct I'm trying to free it myself by hand as we are getting ready to use the van. I believe this cb be a common issue with this era Ducato?

Globecar Van Conversion

Since 2010
Our first van was a 2001 Auto Sleeper 3500 k on a Rear wheel drive Ford. Very smooth drive! It did not stop us from getting stuck in wet grass twice:( No worry - each time the camp site tractor pulled us out! We got fed up making up the bed and so purchased a 2011 Adria Sport with a made up French bed on a Front wheel drive Fiat 2.3. The original Fiat base was a 3250 k but up graded by Adria to 3500 k. Whilst the road holding and engine performance is good the body shell rattles a bit because of the firm rear single springs from the upgrade by Adria. We have managed to reduce the harshness by fitting Air Rides and reducing the Tyre pressures to those recommended by the Tyre manufacture from those by Fiat! I have looked under the bodies of recent 3500 Fiat Ducato's by other manufactures and some have double rear springs on their rear axels. I bet they give a better ride than mine:whistle:
